Upper IC Questions...

This intercooler is retarded.....I have the upper IC with the checkered pattern on it and "INTERCOOLER" written on it all discreetly HUGE. I'm following the free mods recipe and want to hot wire the intercooler pump to always run. Here's the catch... no yellow wire...cant even find the intercooler pump...and I just realised.... I don't even know if its even working...or if it even has coolant in it...I don't even see a spot to fill it up.... its just a big retarded box labeled "INTERCOOLER" Anyone know anything about this thing? Where's the pump so I can at least find the wiring? Will I be able to hear the pump if I connect it to a 12v source to test it? oh, and where do I fill it up, lol... at least the stock ones had an obvious filler cap on them.... who makes this thing anyway? Is there even a benefit to having it?

Follow the hoses connected to it to find the pump .

Pump is under the front of the truck ,you cant see it though its mounted behind the tiny radiator, there is a post that explains how to start the pump from the ALDL. You can hear it run if its working. There is also a fuse behind the alternator. Check that to see if its blown its for the pump. Take your time. Don't let it get to you. Half the fun of owning SY/TY is the wrenching , Try SYTY.ORG for some tech articles.

Re: Upper IC Questions...

If its the checkered one it's either the last ATR/conley unit or else wallers, which run upwards of $500 new and will support much more than the amount of power you're probably making. I seriously doubt someone invested in that and didnt hotwire it or else install a chip with a low temp turn on for the pump. There should be a cap on the top of it just unscrew it and turn on the truck and see if theres any flow or water movement in there. while you do that check to make sure its straight water and no antifreeze.

Re: Upper IC Questions...

I dont remember seeing a cap at all.. I'll check it again tomorrow....

Dynotech performance did the work to the truck, so I would guess he (dave) used their chip...which is like 170 degrees be4 it turns on.... I'd rather have it running whenever the key is in the on position... it's probably empty... i haven't checked it since I bought the truck in August of last year....oops.... IDK what chip is in the truck though... it might be the dynotech one or the pitbull chip I'm guessing due to everything being ATR on this truck...or maybe its that kenne belle chip....I'm swapping out for an ostrich/ultimate anyway, then I'll tune it to perfection from there (if I ever learn how)

I have never seen any evidence to suggest the large aftermarket intercooler offers any performance gains over the stock unit.

On the other hand, I have ran 11.4 @ 117 full weight on pump gas/alky with the stock IC, and Denny Raab has run 10.19 @ 131 with the stock IC.

If you really dislike it so much, you could sell it and use the cash to buy your Ostrich tuning equipment. Now there's a plan for some Bang For the Buck.

Re: Upper IC Questions...

its not so much that I dis-like it, I just want to make sure its working. For some reason or another.. I've never really checked it out... I'm just trying to find out how to test the pump to see if its working, and to find out where to fill the intercooler up... and what to fill it with...and how much... This is my first intercooled vehicle... and I've just kinda left it alone, never noticed it creating problems so I thought no news is good news, but now I'm curious...I read the information on Powertuneplus and am now trying taking a step in the right direction. I'm saving up for an ALDL cable for datamaster form moates... I think daily driving a Typhoon for a year without knowing ANYTHING about it kinda isnt good....

Off topic, but would I need to buy both the ALDL cable from moates and the ostrich? or can I datalog using the ostrich since it's directly connected to the trucks computer?

Re: Upper IC Questions...

Sounds like you're on the right track. If nothing else, get 2 containers or soda bottles and disconnect the IC hoses and turn it on and see what pours out. I believe the owner's manual calls for an IC mix of 70% water, 30% antifreeze. Fill it all the way full.

Yes you need the ALDL cable to datalog (reading data from the truck) and the Ostrich is for reprogramming the truck's ECM (sending data to the truck). If you really want to get fancy/complicated, Moates sells an all-in-one device called AutoProm but I've got no experience with it.

Some Joker broke the neck off, and just plugged it... *sigh*.
A decent radiator shop should be able to fix it for you.

Woah those are a little odd looking with the intercooler/checkerboard writting on the top......for some reason the unit you have comes without a filler cap and plastic neck like the older atr coolers used to have....i'll snap some shots of mine and then you can see the difference.

Re: Upper IC Questions...

Here's the atr unit.....you have to remove the threaded plug from yours and drill/tap for a filler neck or do what I did with my atr cooler on my old Ty before I did that wicked dequik a2a(lol).

I bought an aluminum filer neck/weld on bung that was the standard radiator cap size so I could fill it up with ice faster between runs. If you were closer to me I could slap it on the bridgeport and mill that cheesey stuff off of the top in about 60 seconds, but i'm sure you can find a machine shop closer to your neck of the woods!

Differance between filler caps....IC cap on the left!

The ic upper coolant return line looks like it's pinched between the cooler and the ac box?

Re: Upper IC Questions...

Nothing broke off. I had the same IC on my ty for a number of years before I went A2A. You fill it with a small funnel and put the cap back on. Mine had an o-ring under the head of the Cap/plug. If that was missing you would leak coolant out. Actually its a larger unit than our stocker. I ran mid 11s with it and no problems.

uhm... uh oh.... so...uh....how do I fill it? and dont use just water I presume?
Water or 50/50 in the summer, but toss some coolant in it for winter time if you do end up running water. I'm going to install a drain valve in mine some I can fill it with ice water/ice at the track!
