Used car lot Typhoon....HELP!!!

I'm looking at possibly buying my very first 1992 Typhoon. It has some issues though, and I need some advise. First off, it runs like shit when you first crank it. It misses pretty bad, and the injectors seem to be ticking pretty loud. The engine even shakes, kinda like it has a dead miss. The sales guy....the one that smiles real big with lunch still mashed in his teeth, told me that it runs rough because so many poeple come by and just crank-it up, and then kill it. He says that it just needs to be driven. I don't know. Also, the thing has some MAAAJOR body roll goin on. It's like removing both front shocks and anti-roll bar.....that bad! I don't know if bad shocks would cause that much body roll in these things or not. I was thinking these things would have pretty tight suspension, but this som-bitch is flat out squirrely! One more thing...there is a pretty good clunking sound coming from under the drivers feet, while driving down the road...feels like a u-joint is about to go south, but in the front end. It has 101,000 miles on it, and the exterior and interior are in pretty good shape. Brand new paint job...black w/ grey cladding....new tires....10,000 bucks. Any ideas what might be wrong with this thing, or if it is even worth the money? Oh, one more thing, on the test drive, it felt somewhat sluggish at first, but really seemed to start picking up after a few miles. I did'nt drive it much, because the clunking got progessively worse, and the body roll did'nt like 75 mph very well.

Sounds like the propshaft is going on it ( located under the driver's feet ). If its been sitting, the injectors could be clogged or in need of more service.

that clunking under your feet is most likely the torsion bar mounts that have gone bad, they are about 50 bucks to replace, then do the shock, the clunking will dissapear and the body roll should be mostly gone. Replacing all thh bushings with polyurethane would do wonders. especially for that waggle in the tail end at highway speeds. all in all, sounds like a fair price

Alright, I can handle the torsion mounts, shocks and bushings. Hopefully that will fix the body roll. I'd really like to know if the thing is worth 10,000 bucks with 101,000 miles on it. Should I get ready to do some major overhaul work on the motor and trans, with that many miles? Does'nt look like it has been abused.

Gotta remember 101,000 is a lot of driving. What are the plans for the truck? If you plan on racing it and beating on it, I would be a tad bit hesitant to buy it. If it looks like it was taken care of you will probably be ok, but it is hard to say if you don't know the trucks previous history.

I personally would offer 9,000. But 10,000 isn't that bad either.

Good Luck!

not stock
1. injector ticking is normal.
2. body roll is normal....remember, its a tall suv
3. a motor mount is probably split if the motor is shaking a lot
4. 10k is way high for that many miles, and 'clunking'/missing...i'd offer them $8500.

I definately plan to race and beat on it! It will get plenty of tlc, but it will get be gouged on often. I have a 1992 GMC 4-door S-15 Jimmy 4X4 with 248,000 miles on it, beat on it daily, and it STILL literally burns the tires on the 1-2 shift! Rarely any problems with that thing, but it does get a lot of preventive maintenance. Is the Typhoon a delicate machine? I thought it would have a lot of life left in it, but from what I'm hearing, maybe it does'nt?

$8,000 or walk away

I agree... there's not very many people in the market for a 10 yr old SUV w/ some problems for that kinda money... $7500 cash in hand would probably take it...

You know they probably robbed somebody on a trade-in or picked it up off an auction for about $2000...

Hmmmmm.....I did'nt think of it that way. I appreciate the advice! I'm taking it to a local reputable shop to do a VERY thorough check of the engine compression, drivelines, front-end,.....basically everything to get a idea of what it needs to get her humming. Thing is, there are NEVER these Typhoons on the car-lots down here in East Texas. If I want to buy one, I have go to California or freakin New York to get it. So I can only imagine what shipping or my travel costs would be to go get one else where. I want one so bad, I can't see straight. BUT.....I will not be taken by some cold-cut eatin used car salesman. Hell, I AM a salesman, but of a TOTALLY different venue. I'll offer him 8,000 for it ....IF there is nothing major wrong with it.

shit I'd lowball him even more... if he says no, walk away, go sit by your phone for a day, if he doesn't call, bite the bullet and pay up...

Do you think alot of people are looking at it?? How long has it been there??

I talked to a buddy of mine who sells cars and said even with all the incentives offered now his sales are still slow cuz people are recovering from the holidays... play hardball! They're making a profit no matter

I'll do that! I did'nt mention that this Typhoon has been on his lot since September 2002. He wants to get rid of it! He said something about trying to auction it off on E-bay, and I told him to go ahead! By the way, I test drove this thing, and even with it running like shit, it would obliterate my SHO! That damn turbo SCREAMS!! My wife was trippin! Even my 5 year old liked it!

haha you're doin something right if you're wife's behind you on this one!! My ex gf sited my fascination with my truck as a reason she was leaving and that I paid more attn. to it than I do her, or something like that, I wasn't really paying attention...

My buddy shows up at my house the other day with a mustang... his first new car purchase so he was quite proud, so i couldn't really rag on him..

BUT THEN, I realize it's a 6... Im like...what the hells wrong with you? At least get the GT!!! ...his reason why he didn't... wifey wouldn't let him!!
I told him to march home, get a stool and get his balls back off the top of the refrigerator where she hid them!

She's behind me, cuz she is just as much a gearhead as I am! I thru sum Flo's on my '99 SHO the other day, and now my kids don't want to ride in anything else, cuz it sounds like a " hotrod " ! I get lots of wierd looks at red lights...like wtf?...and I luv it! I'm really lookin forward to getting something with some balls though. I don't remember any of the syclones turbo's, that I used to ride in, be so damn loud?! I hope that is not a sign of something about to go wrong.

Hey guys, I would appreciate a little bit less abuse. Every time you slam a used car salesman, I cringe. Try not to lump US all together. There are bad apples out there in all professions.
As to your post muslhed. The fact that it has been there since Sept. is crucial. As a used car dealer...After 90 days I get really flexible. At 90 days it has got to go. You should be able to get a good discount.
One other thing, every body in the used car business is anxious for the end of January because of tax time. The Ty will probably be sold if you snooze.

you're right. Not all used car salesmen are shisters. BUT, down here, we have way more than a few! There are a few very honest ones. What would you say is a good offering price for this vehicle? When he first got it in, he was asking 12.500 for it. He just recently reduced it to 10,500. I will NOT buy this car with the things that are wrong with it. They would have to be fixed prior to my buying it. So, when I actually give him my offer, it will be on the condition that these things be taken care of. I am taking it to a reputable mechanic to be thoroughly checked out this morning, on MY dollar btw, so I will soon know what all it needs.

good luck

good luck

Usually I mark my cars up around $3,000. He might have really been aggressive.
My advice. Have it checked carfax, as well as your mech. If you really don't trust the guy then you should probably have your mech do the work. That way you know what parts are used and that it is done right.
It is hard to say what it is worth w/o seeing it etc.
Remember that supply plays a big factor in the $value. Being able to drive it and have it checked out before you buy it is a really good plus.
When you get your laundry list of things wronge with it he should get even more flexible. Let him know that there is a bunch of stuff wrong and have an approximate cost (retail) to fix everything. Remind him of how weak the trannies are. He ought to be ready to give it away by the time you get done with him.
Always remember to start low...you can always go up

Ok. Took the Typhoon in question to a reputable body shop to have it checked out first, and put a few miles on it in the process. It is a TOTAL piece of junk. Rear air ride stays aired completely up ALL the time, so I feel like a chavez ride. The clunking is VERY bad, especially when going around in slow circles in a open parking lot. My body shop guy inspected it very carefully, and found that half of the cladding is broken...that's why it does'nt fit flush with the side of the body. The other reason it does'nt fit flush with the body, is because the WHOLE RIGHT SIDE of the body had been cratered by something, and there was some very bad body work done on it. Looked under the front bumper, and the intercooler had been crushed. The underside of the frame looked like someone tried to go rock-crawling in it! Then to top it all off, someone did an even worse job of that paintless dent removal, to fix all the hail damage on the roof. Needless to say, I made the quick decision to NOT spend any of MY money to have my mechanic shop do a thorough check of the trucks mechanicals. It was quickly returned to the car lot, where it will probably sit for a LONG time! It looked good from a distance though!
I really appreciate everyones input and advice. I think I'll look for a good condition Syclone instead.
