wow!

wow!

OK I don't know if you guys missed it or not but I put "thinking about it" its not like I was ripping it apart as I was typing! I love the truck to I was just looking for some input. But really, thanks for your kind and heartfelt responses! I'm not going to pull it apart. I realize that there are a lot better and cheaper things I could turn into a V-8. I don't want to get on anyone's bad side, but I wasn't expecting some responses like I got.

Don't sweat it Quinn, just get tired of people seeing how fast our trucks are then you get the inevitable "imagine if it had a v-8 in it".

I don't know if I speak for everyone, but one of the coolest facts about these trucks is when you do a 10# launch and the passenger who actually believes GT's are fast says "holy shit, this thing has a v-6". The v-6 and awd are what makes the syty's so special, hell any redneck can put a v-8 in a truck(no redneck offense myclone

Get's me very upset to see people who have these things and treat them just like another fast ride. IMO, these are one of the few things the GM beancounters actually went out on a limb for us racers and did soemthing right. examples: 454ss(crap), monte carlo ss(slower crap, but looked better).

IMO these people who are converting to 2wd are actually taking away from the reason we drive syty's. why do that to a syty, when you can do it to a jimmy, sonoma.

rant off.

Why JUST a V8

ttb_4.jpg

... and from the side - even has A/C
ttb_6.jpg

Why not twin turbo V8???
Picture shows a Sy but who really cares???
Stock and unique is V6 turbo IMO, V8 ... everybody can do it (more or less).

M@

BTW the same guy is currently working on another project...
called "2001 C5 engine in a Ty"

Yeah they really built the Syty's 'right'.... :vomit: ... are you insane? No R&D was put into the trucks; there's way too many things they F'd up at the factory. How's that low turbo coolant circuit working? How is your 100k+ syclone motor doing? What's that? you're on your 5th motor, since GM can't give you a proper replacement? Why does it overboost? i dunno...

Cool off the cappacinos Brian......

I meant the whole idea of the project, and the outcome is still pretty badass if you ask me 8)

I think these were engineered pretty well, they did some stuff right, and what they didn't isn't that hard to make right with some research, time, and money. Think they are about the best starting platforms there is for a street machine.

So there.........punk ass biatch.......

hehe

I'm just venting frustration after working on way too many POS trucks. I still have to disagree with the 'engineered pretty well' comment.

The pistons are *weak*
The rods are weak
The turbo is undersized and overboosts easily
The heads are horrible for forced induction
The intercooler heat soaks easily - mounts right to the exhaust manifold?!
The intercooler pump turns on at 190° F, once heat soak is fully in effect
The low turbo coolant circuit i referred to - doesn't even work from the factory.
The engine compartment is crammed full of crap.
The ignition is weak.
The motor mounts are weak.
The heater cores have a lifespan of like 6 months.
The trucks run way too hot.
They have a bazillion vacuum lines, prone to crack & disintegrate.

Yep you can fix a lot, but at what point are you building a completely new vehicle rather than starting with a Syty ?

Can't really argue being as I know nothing about these trucks really......so I'll just shut up now

Now that is what I call BIG MAN'S POWER!

No david, a 383 is small block that is stroked over internally...

That is a Big Block... More than likely over 500 cubic inches...

ive also thought about this conversion, but i agree with all thats been said. Buy an olds bravada, slam it, buy the cladding and then cram a turbo V8 in it. if it has that cladding it better be turbo. and dont dare put typhoon decals on it. and when people ask, say its a V8 ty clone.

i vote for a TT-LS6 :p

anyone know the Weight diffrence between our Iron 4.3s and the aluminum 5.7s? ls1/6?

Long time lurker
hell if u want a V8 ill trade you my SS. i wouldnt do cuz like they siad its a rare truck getting rareer. plus you have to move the firewall back about 1-1/2 inchs to make the distibutor to fit. i have frends with V8 S series pickups and blazers and yea its cool but kinda over rated. but when u woop up on a V8 with a 6cyl it feels good. if anything do a LS1 with a T-56

race or get outta the way
fwiw

last tuesday i kicked the piss outta a v8 s10 at the track.
We were lined up against one another.

he had slicks on the back and he ran a 12.3.

i ran 12.1

i had bfg kds all the way around.

his came and went on a trailer.

mine got driven in

his got put back on the trailer by something with 2 less cylinders.

he got put back onthe trailer.

ya know what

that had to be the be the best feeling when i wupped him, especially with the boost controller not working correctly. (its fixed now and ready for this tuesday)

back in the lanes i went over and as i looked under the hood i said:

"i was hoping to see a six"

he just smiled. then he said to his buddy (not knowing what i was driving)
"lets go look at that". he then walked over to my truck.

He was kinda surprised when i followed him, reached in and popped the hood.

You might have to mess with the firewall for a big block, but a small block drops right in dude. same motor mounts as a 4.3L but then its the same size pistons, rods, lifters, spings, etc too. (4.3 is a Gen1 350 without two cylinders ;) )

i think the rad has to be changed to one of of a C4 vette or similar, but i dont remeber for sure. ive seen some V8 S trucks tearing shit up, but not like typhoons and Syclones do.

The funny thing is that I own this truck now.... It was a real hack job.. Nothing was cut it just had a poopy big block in it... I bought it for 3k minus the engine... I don't want to be the black sheep here but I am doing a lt1 swap in it.. Before you yell at me I am only doing this because everything ty related is missing and would cost to much to replace.. I am also looking into shops to custom build my tt headers.. I respect the v6's very much so and wish this truck was fixable to that point but working with what I have I am going to build it as a v8...

Elec87, put me on you email list. ::thumbsup:: I am currently working on an TT LS1 drop in for my Typhoon. There are a couple of us going V8 here lately. Barry Tisdale is going a SC Vortec truck motor. I am planning on mild mods on my LS1 (turbo camshaft, forged rods, forged pistons, thats it).

Dont let some of these guys get you down, alot of people here think that being a "'TRUE SyTy'er" that it must have a v6 in it, to which I respond... Woulda Buick 3.8L still be a SyTy ?? Some people say that because its a V8 its not a Typhoon. What really kills me is, with the TT LS1 setup in my truck I probably will be running more "STOCK" part than the guys running 10's, but I guess its acceptable to throw in a $2500 stroker crankshaft, or some brodix heads etc, and thats still a SyTy, I dont get it but whatever
dunno.gif
Dont get me wrong, I respect and understand what the 9-10sec guys are doing and I think its cool as hell. Problem is, just because we wanna do something slightly different than an ODDFIRE or STROKER 4.3L motor we are outcasts. I say so be it, anyone that thinks a truck that been repainted and has 110k on it has any collectibility is smoking crack imho. (anyhow, enough venting......)

I decided on the LS1 engine because parts are considerably cheaper for it than a 4.3L, (and LT1 parts are cheaper yet !), and because as of the time I decided to do it, the LS1 turbo hadnt been installed in a Typhoon yet. (I was bored with 4.3's anyhow).
I selected an LS1 out of a '00 Camaro SS, which if I am not mistaken is around 330hp in N/A form (gonna fly with 2 turbos). An LT1 is significantly cheaper and easier to install than an LS1 but for some reason I have fatal attraction with the LS1 motor.

There is a book out there I strongly recommend that you read. Its for the conversion you are contemplating. Personally I say GO FOR IT. ::eek:k:: There has been an LT1 swapped into an S-10 with Syclone running gear (same swap as our trucks basically). The book is from Jags That Run www.v8s10.com and it covers the entire swap (not soo much about LS1's but alot on LT1's) for $35 its the best money spent so far. There are some good recommendations for the swap in that book. The Typhoon has advantages over the S-series truck in that it already has the cable shifter etc, making transmissions easier to accomodate. The T-56 will not fit nor work if you are planning on retaining the AWD (no provisions for Xfer case). The truck transmissions are a possibility I havent explored yet. Obviously you could retain the 4L60/700R4 but I question its lifespan behind a stronger motor.

Just my observations soo far.
