I have both on my SY. The BOV is not needed on our trucks as stated above but are a good backup safety, and they sound cool too. Also, as desribed above, they run off vaccum. Do a search on this forum for BOV's, there is alot of good info here.

Just curoius,when is a BOV necessary?
At a certain boost level?
When you have a larger than stock compressor wheel?(stock turbo)

ask mrwheeler.. I believe he chulked up his last two turbo rebuilds to running too high of boost levels without a bov.. from what i've been told you only really need them or should have them when a manual trans is used but who's to say that's 100%

I think any turbo running over 20-25 psi and being run hard should have a BOV (manual or auto) and I have seen several turbo’s fail multiple times seemingly for no reason at hi boost levels until a BOV was installed, then the "problem" magically went away?? But like Ryan stated above, I can't be 100% sure. I do know that my bro's Shelby Charger wasted 3 in a row and one had more than 2,500 miles or so them, they were all blade failures, and no oil or intake / ex. related particles were ever found to be the cause and he did run it real damned hard. Turbo #4 we installed a BOV after he was "tipped off" to try it and no more problem! I think this may effect small / med. size turbo’s more than the larger / large turbo’s but I :dunno:

Maybe a tad will if your BOV is downstream of your injection site.
Otherwise no,as soon as you stop producing boost pressure your meth pump should shut off.

No certain level or anything. I've always had one no matter what boost level I was running. I stops the air from going back through the turbo after you let off the gas. Think of it as trapped air thats already stuck in the tube, it has to go somewhere. Either out through the BOV or backwards through the turbo. So the blades are spinning at an insane speed in one direction, and now air is trying to go back through them the opposite direction. Your turbo can only take so much of that before it fails.It's just a six said:

I have my M10 alky nozzle pretty close to the throttle body. My understanding is a BOV should be installed as close to the throttle body as possible. With the RPM upper IC pipe, I'm planning on welding the BOV flange right by the alky nozzle. Will there be any issue with doing this?

the bov should not leak under throttle, thats why there is a vacuum line that goes to the top to force the valve closed. when you let off, the spring coupled with the engine vacuum will allow it to open and release the excess pressure.
the higher the boost, and the larger the turbo the more important it is to have a blowoff valve. 95% of the syty guys dont run 25+ psi so thats why it is not a very common mod..
