Water Vapor?

I have noticed that the past couple of times when I start my Typhoon that there is alot of water vapor coming out of the exhaust. I thought it was blue smoke when I saw it the first time, but then after I let the truck idle for about 5 to 8 minutes I see that the ground gets wet from the vapor and I see some drops of water sometimes drip out of the exhaust pipe. Is this normal or should I be worried about something? Thanks for any information regarding this topic.

Re: Water Vapor?

The above comments are correct. However I would pay attention to the radiator as well. Double check that the rad is full (check with engine cold) AND the header tank is at the correct level. Then follow them for a few days to confirm that you're not using any water.

Re: Water Vapor?

Nice, good news then, thanks for the info. One more question, what is the header tank?

Re: Water Vapor?

Puff of smoke on start up is valve seals and is a pretty common problem. Have some start your truck up Condensation evaporates, smoke will linger around..

Re: Water Vapor?

Yes, after about 5 to 8 minutes the vapor disappears so I guess it is condensation. I will check the radiator and the resorvoir tank tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys!!!!

Re: Water Vapor?

5 - 8 mins is a log time for just valve guides, I suggest you keep a close eye on oil and water consumption.

Don W.,
I don't really understand what you wrote, sorry I am not really that good as a mechanic. Can you please explain valve guides and also watching the oil and water consumption. How do I tell when something is wrong with my oil and water consumption? Thanks

Re: Water Vapor?

A small puff of smoke out the exhaust on start-up is common with our engines. In my experience it goes away almost immediately. You said it lasts for 5 - 8 minutes. Sit and look at your watch, 5 - 8 minutes is a long time for smoke to be coming out of your exhaust and then stop. Different things have been mentioned.

Water consumption is kept track of by watching the radiator and the header tank before you start the truck. I have seen the radiator go low with water still in the header tank which is why I'm suggesting you watch both. Same with oil consumption, check the dipstick before you start. Both with engine cold and truck near level. If you are confused with this have someone show you.

Re: Water Vapor?

I know when the truck warms up the coolant is supposed to go into the resorvoir tank, right? What should I be looking for to happen with the oil, I guess decrease when it warms up? What other signs should I look for in case something is wrong with my truck? Thanks again for all the info.
