Weird brake problem...

Hi,

I bought my Ty ('92, #686) about five years ago and I still have it as a daily driver, even though it has received a bunch of mods over the years...

There's one thing that has been bothering me as long as I've owned my Ty - brakes feel REALLY strange. I thought it was a feature and there was nothing wrong with them but after taking another Ty for a spin I realized that the brakes are REALLY screwed up.

Symptoms? There's a hissing sound when the brake pedal is pressed, it feels like the pedal is sticking (how could I describe it... pretty much like having a bolt overtightened and the pedal can't move properly?) both ways. Additionally, brakes themselves - not just the pedal - are sticking slightly, ie. when I take my foot off the brakes they keep braking for about half a second.

I have disabled the ABS unit (no free recalls by GM Europe even though the original ABS box is on the list for a good reason - bummer!), flushed the system, installed new brake pads etc. and nothing seems to work. The only things yet to be checked are master cylinder and brake booster and if there are any typical problems with either, I'd *LOVE* to hear about them.

Any ideas? It's snowing again and driving with brakes like these feels almost suicidal... :-/

Possible your master cylinder is malfunctioning. Hissing though.. You think your vaccuum assist is giving up?

First off, I dont know how to diagnose brake problems but...

A hissing would imply a vacuum leak. Your brake booster works off of the vacuum in your upper intake manifold. So to rule out the brake booster itself being the cause of the problem, make sure there are no leaks in the rubber hose that goes from your brake booster to your intake. Also, there is a check valve where the hose attaches to your booster...make sure air can only go through it one way.

Just an idea...
