Weird Plug

Trying to tune out an idle miss to pass smog. Pulled out my new plugs. No boost launch. Just normal driving on these. Very few miles. Found this. All the others look like th one on the left. Wuzup...

Re: Weird Plug

Looks like oil contamination. Usually from the intake tract. Bad valve guide seal, intake gasket or along those lines. Oils getting deposited on the plug from somewhere.

What cyl # was it?

Looks like an oil-foul to me. I'd also suspect a bad guide, or a PCV that's leaking something into the intake.

Another possibility... bad intake gasket on that hole... sucking in oil from the lifter valley.

Re: Weird Plug

It was cyl 4. The engine doesn't use any oil, I don't think it's that. PVC valves are new. A plug site I found:
http://www.centuryperformance.com/spark2.asp
says it's a bad/dirty inj. I have a miss, I have an extra inj, I'm changing that now. I've put a new plug in that hole so after inj is changed I'll drive it for a while and pull that plug and see if it's changed.

Thanks all, I'll let you know what happens.

Re: Weird Plug

Inj changed. It does -seem- to run better but you know how that goes. Still a very slight miss. Hard to tell if it's much less, certainly not worse. Plugs are now gaped to .035. Scope goes on it next week.

Re: Weird Plug

What plugs are you using? I fix my problem by changing to NGK UR6IX part # 7348, Gap at .030 with a MSD 6A

Re: Weird Plug

Regular UR5's @ .035. Love to get the 6a. Did you notice a difference?

Yes, I notice a big difference in how the truck ran. I went from every 3 months to every 2 years on plugs with a much smoother idle and a increase in gas mileage.

Re: Weird Plug

My plugs were doing that too don. on mine it was the 1 and 4 plugs. I never figured out why. I hope my new build took care of that. Check the wires too. Could be a bad one. I have a used Taylors set minus the 6 wire if you find a bad one.

I was afraid you'd say that! :D

Re: Weird Plug

Well I had a scope put on it and they said my dist was bad. No way to tell if it was the module or the reluctor(sp?). Installed a rebuilt. Right away I noticed and improvement in how quickly it starts. Down side is it still has a miss at idle.

The miss is random and often enough to fail the smog. Otherwise I wouldn't be here.

My next step, haven't decided for sure, is iridium plugs. I also have a set of stock inj's. Thinking I might send those out for rebuild. Any recommendations?

Registration is up next week so I'll get an extension there. Would like to figure this out though. I don't like to just keep throwing parts at it. Could call the scope place but that's another 65.00 and a weeks wait.

Truck runs great otherwise and racing starts the 7th so want it running for that.

Re: Weird Plug

:rotf: Ask and you shall receive.:rotf: I have a block-off plate, will test tomorrow. But I have to ask, what "couple of ways" are you thinking about. Mixture, idle speed, ?? I'm getting tired of chasing this rather minor idle miss just for smog and would like to move on.

Thanks

Re: Weird Plug

40# static (engine off) I don't think it's that. When I'm hooked up to the sniffer (manual mode) and play with the FP it make almost no difference. Something else going on IMO. Will be pulling the EGR today for a test. If that doesn't do it I'm thinking a set of iridium plugs then a set of rebuilt inj's.
