I had that problem with my stock convertor, drove us nuts trying to find it. I should really cut it apart and see what was going on. My guess was that the clutch was chattering on engagement.

You can try adding a bottle of lubeguard to the transmission oil. Better yet have the fluid flushed and add the lubeguard. That may help, it didn't in my case but i was also pushing the truck really hard at the time.

I would think there are 2 possible causes:

1. false knock just from the shock of the engagement, especially on the 9/11 if you have that little ball removed so the TCC locks up hard and fast.

2. True knock from the extra load that is put on the engine momentarily.

See what your O2 millivolts are when the TC locks up. See if it drops off really low momentarily. Sluggish O2 sensor may be letting it lean out much(sluggish meaning it doesn't "bounce" as often as it should when in closed loop), a kink in the line or a partially plugged fuel filter may be a problem also. TC shouldn't be locked under WOT and the ECM is supposed to go into power enrichment so if you are having large amounts of knock on full throttle launches through the gears, it won't be TC clutch related. Check timing also and make sure it hasn't been advanced. Mine was advanced 8 degrees by previous owner. Runs soooo much cooler when it is set where it is supposed to be

Blake,

This is the first time I've heard the tc shouldn't be locked under wot. I think the ecm locks it around 70mph?

FWIW, I think it is quite common to see a couple degrees kr spike when it locks. I think it is load related, since removing timing in that area seems to help. Good gas also helps.

I got that from a post from ol Brian Green a while back. Seems for best performance you don't want the TC locked when you are off the throttle and you don't want it locked when at full throttle. It is possibly he was talking about when you initially stab the throttle(unlocking on downshift). This may be what is "best" but of course guys are using the lockup switches and such at the track so TC may still lock at WOT on regular setups. I need to run a datamaster on my own truck to see what happens now that mine is running again. I think I remember Tooky saying his locked up at about 70 mph also. Thanks for making me think a little more instead of just typing out of my arse!!

Yep, I'm a dumbass! Just looked at some runs I've got from other trucks that are running perfectly. 70 mph lockup at WOT. I've gotta lay off the crack

Blake,

You're not a dumbass. I pay attention to your posts, (always good stuff), so you had me doubting myself.
