What are you not happy with.
Does it feel sloppy, does not feel engaged?
What stall is it,,,,size,etc???
Is it a lockup converter?
Price??? what was the price?

Is your Trans Am built?
1.6 in a Trans Am,better have sticky tires/slicks

Re: who is happy with their 4l80 converter?

im not here to contest my yanks performance

yes my t/a is more or less 'built'

i run a 17" drag radial and the car has been a 9.5 best ET; best mph over 149; best short time a 1.57 on the footbrake

i guess i did not specifically imply that i am referring to picking a converter for my TY to go along with the 4l80 swap happening to it. wondering if i can get a good proven converter for it without shelling out a grand.

Call George, if anyone can do it or have it done.... he can!
On the flip side, there is nothing about a 4L80E that is "cheap", of course you have to factor in that most likely you will only have to buy it once which is "cheaper" than multipal times like the 700R4.

I think any good lockup converter for a 4l80E is going to cost you $800.00 - $1000.00 range.

I also have never seen a good one for cheaper than that.

Cheap with ability for WOT lockup doesn't happen.
3 disc lockup is $900 to $1000. Small diameter full billet design. The $450 converters are the single disc lockup 65 pound 13" diameter converters. You don't want your engine trying to turn that. If you go with no lockup, you will suffer in the quarter. Frank from Autoaddictions has already experimented with that.
How the converter is matched means a LOT no matter who you use.
If you do a bunch of "guessing", you get a "guess" converter. If you give them facts, dyno sheets, gear ratios, vehicle weight, tire size, turbo boost levels, etc, you will get something dead on. So don't blame Yank or PI or whatever, it comes down to giving the correct information. Just because Billy Bob has the exact same build, doesn't mean yours will behave the same. Dyno graphs mean a LOT to a converter builder. The problem can be in the tune.

Send it to Prime Gears, George is a stand up guy he does great work. I have one of his 4l80e transmissions and it Rocks. I do allwheel drive burnouts and cant hurt mine. At leat give him a call and have him give you idea of what you need. If you dont want to send him your trans i believe he can send you the right parts and you can have a local trans shop install everything for you.

i might be wanting to have my cake and eat it since i've been used to manual trans for most of my hobby.

my yank locks up good, but its a little sloppier on the throttle response than i would like, but i was reccomended not to lock it when racing. i think the performance when racing is very good. (in my t/a)

the original confusion and dissatisfaction came when i ordered a 3000 stall converter expecting it to stall at 3k and finding out it would only go to 2100. then the hassle to remove it and send it back get cutopen and restalled to 3400, thankfully the 3400 is very close to actually being 3400 and has helped my footbrake short times immensely.

A thousand rpm off?
99% says you didn't give them all the info needed. I'm not kidding. You get the info dead on and the stall will be damn close. You give them "it makes 300HP" and the stall will be a toss up. That goes for anyone that makes a converter.

Re: who is happy with their 4l80 converter?

Mine is a Coan. The street manners are great. Just like a stocker.

I have driven and tuned on Sy/Ty's with a yank and a Precision. The Coan has the best street manners out of the three. The P.I. was the worst for street manners. It felt really loose and needed alot of throttle input to get going.
