On Monday I will be the proud owner of a 92 Typhoon, blue and grey, #1135 I believe.
Getting it used from a dealership, so we will see how it goes. According to the dealer, only one owner, never rod'd, mod'd, and owned by and older man who only drove it every now and then. Ok, I'm not holding my breath too hard though.

53K on the odometer.
Everything looks decent for now, no leaking/spraying that I noticed. Riding in that tiny "suv" brought me back in the day driving around my little S-10 I used to have!

Can't wait for the snow up here in Anchorage Alaska so I can see what kind of fun I can have.

I have a chubb.

Re: WooT!

As soon as I pick up the rig I will get some pics, but the weather has been pretty crappy lately, so no promises on the quality QuickStorm. Or I might be too busy driving it to get a pic.

I might have the wrong VIN Jimmy, just took a quick glance when I remembered to check it out for the forums. I am partially color blind, so what I had seen as dark blue might be black. Partially color blind means that sometimes the colors are screwy and sometimes they aren't, but I am leaning towards a combo of me being stoked at getting the TY and natural idiocy. Dealership is Chevrolet of South Anchorage, http://www.anchoragechevrolet.com/

Meh, color is nice but I won't be picky! I finally got a Typhoon! Now I just have to troll the forums to see what I need to get so that it is more reliable. I'm not looking to get it insanely cracked out, I would like to keep it as close to stock as possible. I'm dumb enough as it is, I don't need too much horsepower compounding that!

Re: WooT!

Wow. Do you all have some kind of wireless neural network wetware in your head or something? Talk about quick responses! I feel special!

Excuse my ignorance, but according to the carfax I am going to be the fourth owner? No big deal, just trying to learn a bit. No crashes, no odometer roll back, nothing major, I'm happy!

Jimmy, you said that it is the highest known Aspen VIN, ummm, that reads like english, but I don't know what you are saying. Is this one of the last built in that area? No pics yet, and I didn't find the rig on the website.

aspen ty's are one of the rarest color combo, so when people say they have one. red flag is raised and the diehards start to speculate and investigate. its not necessarily, to prove you wrong but rather a quest to find more of the rarer colors. but sportsmachines say you have a black/grey truck.

Aspen is a bright electric blue,so you probably saw a black truck.

Re: WooT!

I see, and I am illuminated. Sorry, didn't mean to get people up in arms, but thanks for looking out for me!

I am happy with a black TY, hell it could be Joker Purple and I would be happy with it! I have a TY, which is rare enough for me, and fun to boot! I had thought it was a dark blue color, but it probably is just a dirty @ss black color. Black is hard to keep clean...

Re: WooT!

My daughter is going to turn four in a couple weeks, and I am already planning on how to terrorize whoever looks at her a little off! Thankfully, I will have the help of her older brother who is looking to be about the size of a mack truck.

I can sympathize with Jimmy, I'm sure that he has the vehicle to chase down whoever he feels is in need of adjustment. 8)

One owner, 4 owners, as long as everything else is clean I am happy. I HAVE A TY! Or will have one on Monday. Any special advice for a new owner?

I picked up my Blue/Grey at a GMC dealership. I beat a guy by about 10 minutes with a check, It barely hit the floor when my friend called me about it.

Good luck with the Phoon!

Re: WooT!

Boogly just a few things i must say. I read this entire thread and was going to ignore writing anything but i feel i need to. First of all you sound thrilled to own a TY and thats great. You state that you dont know the color??? But you are picking it up today, did you test drive it? You also said the dealer stated one owner then carfax didnt. My 2 cents would be the following.

Tell the dealer to run a carfax even though you seen it already and tell them you want to see if it says one owner. The dealer will tell you anything to see you a car. I worked at two different ones when i was in school and you will be amazed what they say to get that car off the lot.

Two - Have the truck looked over by a mechanic that doesnt work there. There are a few things you need to know and there is s buying tech sheet that helped me alot. I went through the entire sheet step by step. http://www.syty.org/old/buyers.html

The problem with these trucks are that they can cause you headaches and then you can regreat getting one or they can be great and you can have a smile like me everytime you drive it.

I just wanted to tell you what i think and dont believe what the dealer has to say. He doesnt know the car just like you dont. They look it over when it hits the lot and thats it.

Re: WooT!

Vinnie,
Thanks for the link on the buyers guide, I didn't look too deep into the old forums for info to look over. For my first mistake, was reporting the color wrong, as I said I am partially color blind, so when I see black at night I assume it is a dark blue because I have been wrong so many times in the past. I thought I knew the color, but got it all FU.

I tried to make the dealer comment about one owner a bit sarcastic. I am not trusting them too much.

I took it for a test drive, and I wish I had looked more into the old forums. The AC works, the brakes work good, tested near the end of rush hour traffic. The suspension seemed on par with my old SRT 4, kinda rough but what can you expect? The fluids looked good, though I didn't pull the cap off of the radiator.

I have a friend who runs a garage and he is going to go over the rig with a fine tooth comb. He is one of those truly anal people who are only happy with the best so I am in good hands.

Final question, is the Chilton manual for the GM Blazer/Jimmy/Typhoon/Bravada 1983-93 the manual to buy? Or should I look into another manual?

WooT! Picking up the rig today! I am stoked.
Once again, thanks to everyone on the forums for the excellent help and pointers!

Boogly i was just trying to help a fellow ty or sy owner and i hope it did help. I would recommend tp print out the buyers guide and give it to your mechanic just as a reference point. I wish you luck on your new purchase. This site is great and i am almost sure you can get answers on here just like you can from the chiltons. I do have one at home which if i am not mistaking is the one you stated. Here is the link to one...

The Manual you want to buy is the Factory Service Manual. You can find a order form at the back of the owner manual or go online to this place.

Re: WooT!

Vinnie,
You, like everyone else who posted, has been a huge help. Lots of pointers to look into, and I am looking forward to looking further into my new rig!

Woot! It is in fact, black and grey, but the paint is showing its age, so for my ego, I am going to call it "tactical black, subdued" for now. :rotf: No pics as of yet, was busy showing it off today, oh this rig brings me back!

So which manual would be better for my Ty? The Chiltons or Factory Service Manual? Or do they mirror info for each other? I am wanting to get something that addresses the "reliability" mods such as fuel pump and tranny.

Re: WooT!

Here's a little history on #1135 for you guys. Original owner is unknown (to me), but a Wasilla resident named Cal was the second owner. He had it for quite a while. It was actually more his wife's truck, and she didn't drive it much. Cal traded it in at Chevrolet of South Anchorage earlier this year, and it was bought at the end of May by a younger guy named Rudy. Rudy had the Ty for about 2 months and managed to get the dealer to take it back because of a "rough idle". Since then, they've had it on the wholesale lot, which is where Boogly picked it up I assume.
I test-drove this truck back when Cal had it in 2004 at 49k miles (even made a post about it). And I have more recently gone and looked at it at the Chevy dealer. It still seems to be in good shape aside from the faded cladding, peeling clearcoat on the wheels, and bad ELC pump (I pulled the fuse out last time I was there to keep it from running forever). I remember there were some holes drilled in the dash where Cal had a cell phone holder or something mounted.

Congrats on your purchase!
