ZR Won

GM TURBO

Sell Out
I was headed back from my parents this weekend about 8:00. I have the cruise set about 72 - I see a car on the on ramp - merging into my lane. It is a Corvette - 90's - I don't really think much of it. I pull into the right lane and let him come on - I pass him as he isn't up to speed yet. I keep an eye on him - he was going pretty fast on the on ramp - I would to if I had a Vette :)

So I am in the left lane - he is getting into the right lane. As he gets on the interstate - he jumps on it and gets in front of me to pass a car. I figure it will be kinda fun to play for a little bit - although I'm not a big fan of racing at night - especially with no radar detector. So he gets back in the right lane - I get along side of him. I am in OD about 75 - I punch it HOPING to get the downshift - I didn't. I start to pull - or so I thought - he is at my rear bumper. I am watching him in my side mirror - and then the only thing that can come out of my mouth if "Holy Shit!" As he passes me. My RPMs are climbing - I am moving - although I would have been better off in Drive to get this brick rolling. And he just keeps on pulling. The last I glanced down at the speedo was 115 - and then I saw him back out of it - or at least I started to finally gain on him :)

So he gets in front of me in my lane - square taillights - wide rear tires - ZR-1?? Nah, couldn't be. So I try to get closer to look at the rear bumper - I can see something but can't make it out for sure. I try to get closer but, I don't want to ride the dude's ass because I'm really not pissed and don't wanna give that impression.

I wanted to try again - this time in 3rd - but at the same time I don't want to get spanked again. We pull into the tollbooth - I get behind him and I see the logo.

So I felt bad having my ass handed to me - but better knowing it was a ZR-1. I am sure it would have been slightly closer if I would have gotten the downshift - or pulled it down into 3rd. I was hoping to get a race outta the toll booth - but I had to get behind him as the other lanes were filled with trucks.

I tried my dads non ZR-1 on the freeway the other day from about a 40mph roll...

I didn't get the "kick in the ass" 3rd to 2nd downshift I was hopin for but I don't think it would have mattered.

He pulled away like I had I ran outta gas!!

I drove the Vette around for an hour or so on saturday..

It doesn't "feel" as fast as the TY just because the transmission is much smoother and shifts a whole lot softer...

The cornering is AWESOME though...and the sound of a healthy V8...ooooooooh yeahhhhhhhh

Nothing to be ashamed of by getting pulled from a roll against a ZR-1. There isnt a top end to those things to us mere mortals  (although Id like to give it a try if someone would throw me the keys to their ZR)

My ZR-1 in stock trim ran 12.63@113 at an altitude density of about 2000ft... Not many cars can compete from a roll. From a stop, it'd depend a LOT on the driver. I was able to get 1.94 60ft best and usually high 1.9xs out of the car at the strip(moderately prepped, nothing special). On the street, I'd say it'd do equiv of about 2.05s... This was with stock gearing which is good for about 62MPH in 1st and 118 or so in 3RD gear.

How to spot a TRUE ZR-1? Look at the rear license plate(no, I'm not making fun of you getting beat). If there is a black plastic band about 1.5" wide between the plate and the reverse lights, its a true widebody and almost certainly a ZR-1. I think there are only a few Vette's out there that have been widened in this manner, and if they have, they probably aren't stock anyways... Other signs which aren't as distinguishing, but can help contribute... ZR-1 badges(but anybody can get these), square taillights with a high mount stop light(although a pre 91 car can be converted to squares and won't look much different).

From the driver seat.... You see the rear fenders taking up about 20% of the mirrors.. :) Truly an awesome car.
