Chipping information

I'm in desperate need of some schooling in regards to the whole computer and chipping system. I'm not familiar with anything that deals with that. I've been modding my car in other places, but feel that it is time to take it to the next level in a sense...lol...I have these two chips that came with the TY when I bought it and have started a thread prior to this with no results that helped me out. I have pulled my computer once to see what is in it and I believe it was the stock chip. I just ordered a 3 bar map sensor tonight and want to get this thing rolling. One of the chips I have says "Alden 3bar stock inj". Ok, simple enough, it's a 3bar chip burned for stock inj (which I have) What's the Alden part though? The guy who burned it? That chip is all green with pins that you have to plug in. The other one I have, has a blue cover and when I take it off it reads "17 T1" I'm thinking it means 17psi, but I don't know what T1 means? This chip looks like something plugs into it, because it has a row of slots for something to plug into it. I can take pics if anyone needs them in order to help me out. Do these both have to be installed at the same time, along with the 3 bar map? Sorry for how long this is. Thanks in advance to anybody who is willing to help me out with this!!!!!

EDIT * After searching through things, the "17 T1" chip is called a MEMCAL....whatever that is*

Re: Chipping information

okay i dont know a whole lot, but im glad to help with whatever i can.
the one with the blue top sounds like a "memcal", that blue top should pop off.
it will hold the bin(the file with all of the tuning pararmeters) and it should have a squishy little thing on the other side of chip this holds information that is specific to our trucks(i believe its called ESC, electronic spark control??)
there are aftermarket memcal's like Kenne Bell.
and then there are carriers that plug into ecu, and then memcal will plug into the carrier.
notice the ultimate chip which can have many bins loaded into it, and you can switch betwwen the bins with a display.
look here: http://www.sytychips.com/10n1instructions.html
this way you can have a street tune and then just push a button and switch to a race tune.
there are a couple of guys that make chips on here, you can check with the vendors.
or you can buy some hardware and do the tuning yourself, which is getting easier to do with all the advancements that the nwstp guys are making.
hope this helps

Re: Chipping information

Alden is probably the person or company who burned the chip. Is this one just a chip (looks like a square spider with around 28-32 legs)? Or is it a whole memcal- with a rectangular female plug on one side thats approx 3/8" x 4" long?

The one with the blue cover sounds like the whole memcal. You can take a factory memcal and remove the stock chip. Sometimes they will pop right out, somtimes they are very lightly soldered in place. It is possible that the stock chip in this memcal was just erased and re-burned with the 17 T1 program, and they put a sticker on the chip to indicate it isnt stock. 17 T1 sounds like an ultimate bin, which should provide 17 psi at their T1 level of timing. I never had one of these chips, so I cant say for sure but I have seen posts here where some were 2 bar and some were 3 bar.

As for that 3 bar MAP, you MUST run it with a chip designed for a 3 bar map.

You can learn to do your own programming too. Go to Moates.net for an adapter or spare chips and a burner. One of your existing memcals will probably work as an adapter, so you can probably save $30 right there. Get an EEProm, so you dont need an eraser. You could also buy an Ostrich or an Autoprom, and if you did you could tune in real time with a laptop- no chips, erasing or burning needed. All of this is available at Moates.net. You will need a cable to scan the engine, which is a good idea even if you dont burn your own chips. Get TunerPro RT, at Tunerpro.com (?) it will be the only software you need for scanning, reading, programming, erasing, emulating and editing a bin. It is free to try, and has a $30 registration donation if you like it.

Re: Chipping information

Alright, I think I'm understanding this a little better now. I have Diacom that I run in my car, but I do want to get Tunerpro. So what I'm understanding right now is that in my car I have a 2 bar map, stock chip and stock memcal going right now. Now what I'm wondering is, if all this stuff I have will work together ( 3 bar map, 3 bar chip, and the 17T1 memcal) But the chip is a burnt 3 bar chip, not an ultimate, so will this memcal work with the chip I have or can I just plug the chip into the stock memcal, then put in the 3 bar map? I guess that's what I'm still confused about. What combinations are required in order to work properly? Do you have to have a specially made memcal for a 3 bar chip or will the stock one work ok?

Thank you all for the info. so far!!

I just got my 3 bar map today. Anymore help on my ?'s

Well, since we don't know much about what's in 'em, we have to make a few assumptions.
(Big ones, at that)

My guess is that the MEMCAL that you have that's marked 17-T1 is just that- a 3bar chip
burned into a stock memcal, with the T1-17 ultimate setting.

The Alden thing is tougher. My guess is that this is who the chip was burned for (Former owner) or a codename. It's anybody's guess as to what this is.
(I codenamed things a while back... now I print labels off to avoid this very problem)

I'd start with the 3bar MAP and the memcal alone. WATCH your boost! If you don't have an external boost gauge or a scan tool of some sort, I wouldn't try any of these chips.
You *will* regret it if you try this stuff without monitoring it.

Re: Chipping information

Alright, will do. I have an aftermarket boost gauge and I'll also be running diacom. I'm mainly installing these things because 1) I have them 2) I'm having overboosting problems right now and don't want to adjust the stock WG. Plus, it will be kind of fun to run 17-18 psi. So I don't even have to run the "alden" thing?!?!? I can just put the 3 bar map and the memcal in. What exactly does the "alden" thing do then? I understand the memcal and 3 bar map. Sorry if I sound too much like a noob. Just trying to learn as much as I can! Thanks Dig

The Alden thing is what's commonly referred to as a "piggyback adapter".
Examples: Moates G1, older Hypertech, Ultimates.

The Alden thing essentially "bypasses" the PROM chip on the memcal and uses its own. The only thing it needs the memcal piggybacked for is the ESC "chip" (knock detection) that's on one end of the memcal.

The MEMCAL you have (I think) is a 3bar chip in its own right, so you can run it by itself.

If you're having overboost problems now, put good gas in it before trying any of this. It'll save you a motor.

Also, be advise that Diacom is unaware of a 3Bar map sensor, so its boost and MAP readings will be off. At least you'll be able to see knock, though.

Re: Chipping information

Alright cool. I understand everything now! I have my boost gauge I'll be watching and Diacom for knock. Right now at like 15psi with 91 octane I get like 1 to sometimes 2# knock between shifts. I'll be watching it very closely though. I think I should be fine though as I don't really race it at a track although I do want to go. Oh yeah, I figured out the Alden thing. You were right, it's the first name of one of the previous owners, actually, the original owner! (Looked at receipts back to 1993) Thanks a lot! Shouldn't be that hard installing these right?
