Need opinions

Alright, I bought my Typhoon in January after my 1992 silverado got totalled by a drunk driver. After receiving the insurance money for it I had a choice of either buying the Typhoon that I have today or a 2000 chevy silverado. I didn't receive enough money to buy the silverado (about 2000 short) and I had enough to buy the Typhoon. My dad would have lended me the rest of the money to buy the silverado, but I would have owed him back and didn't want that, so I bought the TY. I love the TY and everything and it has been VERY reliable with nothing breaking thus far and it's my DD. Now I have the opportunity to buy that very same silverado at a better price then before. I am in college and it's a 14 hour drive each way plus I drive it everyday so I'm starting to think about reliability and things that will begin to go out due to age. Also, the TY has some minor rust spots that should be dealt with and being in college I don't really have the time or money to do some body repairs, but I will if I have to. So I'm in the predicument(?) of either selling the TY and buying the silverado or keep the TY and due some body repair and just drive it/mod it. It has 133K miles on it already though so that's why I'm beginning to wonder if it will continue to be reliable....... I planned on keeping this TY my whole life, but lately just thinking I can buy a better one with less miles after I graduate from college and have the silverado and a different TY. Also have more money to give it the attention it needs. What are your guy's opinions? Mind you this silverado is bad@$$ too. 2000 Chevy Silverado- 7" lift w/ 35 in. tires. Pretty much all stock except for lift kit and it is owned by the original owner who has babied it. It also has 100K miles, but 8 years newer worth of parts on it compared to the TY.

P.S.- Sorry for the long post

Re: Need opinions

Here's your answer buy a cheap beater car and keep the Ty!! Just because you buy a new or newer car doesn't mean you wont have problems. I bought a 2003 Chevy Extreme brand new off the lot with 3 miles, that thing had more problems than the 20+ cars i've ever owned combined. I'm not kidding when I say I owned it for about a year and it spent more time in the shop than me driving it.

Besides the 2000 Silverado is going to drop in value faster than you could imagine and the Ty will at least hold a reasonable value. The silverado with its cool 7" lift (not to disbelieve you but I dont know anyone that makes a 7" lift, more likely a 6") is going to get very bad fuel milage especially when fuel is sooo expensive not the best investment, plus those tires arent cheap either.

Im am being bias towards the Ty and hope you consider keeping it, that silverado will always be there the Ty may not! Hope this helped!

Where the poll at? You need to add it to your posting.

Well if you sell, I will tell you that you regret it whenever you think about it. But you need to ask yourself the following questions.

1. Do I still enjoy this toy as a DD or will I enjoy the Silverado more?

2. Does it burn oil or will the Silverado burn more? This one is listed because one of the guys at work had a Silverado that burn oil from day one and GM could not find any thing wrong with it. Oil use was 2 quarts every 2,000 miles. He ended up trading it in for a Ford when it had 40,000 miles on it.

3. Does the trans still shift fine?

4. Will I get better MPG with the Silverado?

5. Will my overall cost be cheater with the Silverado?

6. MOST IMPORTANTLY (What did I hit my head on that would cause me to think about this in the 1st place)?:rotf: :rotf:

Having stated all this, you alone know the status of your Typhoon and you alone must make this decision. I think I would do the following to the Ty. For the next upgrade you do. Add a remote filter and trans cooler w/fan as heat and boost lanching is what kills most of them.

I kind of worded that wrong. I don't mean I drive that 14 hour each way drive a lot. I make the trip back down to So. Cal. like twice a year. And then.........I drive it everyday up at college. Not like 14 hours each way every week....lol

I don't know how to add a poll!!!!!!!!

1. I enjoy this car as a DD, but I can also see me enjoying the silverado. Leaning towards the TY side though because I like speed mainly and knowing that I have it there for all the ricers. (Not reliable for tranny though :rotf: )

2. My TY doesn't burn oil at all!!! It has a small drip, but it's a kind of easy fix. I'm quite sure the silverado doesn't burn oil either. :dunno:

3. The tranny in my TY shifts perfect....i think....it was rebuilt by the last owner approximately 6K miles ago.

4. Even with the lift kit I'm sure it gets better gas mileage then the TY. It has the 4.8L in it and I would be using 87 octane, not 91.

5. The overall cost will probably be about the same because I pretty much use all my extra money on cars :rotf: Maintenance wise the Silverado might be cheaper, hard to say. The TY has been extremely reliable so far though, besides the starter going out but that will be fixed soon ;)

6. This is the most important question!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!! I guess it's because I've been doing tile work acrossed the street from this truck and have been looking at it everyday. If I only had an extra 9 G's lying around, I could buy it and have both. :rotf:

And a B&M tranny cooler is on the way

Re: Need opinions

I've had a 4.8L they are turds you will wish you had kept the Ty!!!
Go drive the thing and with the lift kit, I'll bet if we race the Silverado and my Sy and I run in reverse only I still kick its ass in the quarter!! LOL I dont know thought it sounded good!!

Damnit dont buy that truck, you cant say it wont need parts. I worked at a place that installed lifts for about 6 years, IFS truck with lift kits eat front end parts, youll go through tie rod ends all the time and if it has 9" or 10" or widder wheels you will start eating bearings and they arent cheap. Last I cheaked they were $300 ish a side and dealer ONLY!

DONT BUY ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!
LOL am I being tooo pushy?

HAH!!! I went for a drive in the TY after I made this post. I had to...LOL...I think I would miss it too much!!! Yet I am also 6'5 and it's a PIA to get into the TY. (Yet I want a SY, go figure) Perhaps I'll save and buy a beater truck  We'll see, still debating with myself.

Re: Need opinions

Keep the TY! i work for 3 car dealerships, and we have over 300 used cars and trucks at any given time. I see a lot of diff trucks and cars, Ive seen a lot of problems with the lifted trucks like the peeps above me in this discussion, front end problems, tire problems, and i bet the gas mileage isnt that much better if it is driven in town mostly. If i was getting ready to trade my sy for another truck it wouldnt be for a lifted silverado. Esp one with high miles. Opinions are like ass holes, every one has one, that being said, mine is keep the ty or if you are going to get rid of it for something else make a wiser buying decision.
