Oil Pump Drive Shaft Question

My oil pump came with a short piece of steel rod (drive shaft) maybe around 6" long if I remember correctly. The problem is the drive shaft just loosely slips over the short shaft from the oil pump and is not held in place by anything. Is that normal?

it should have sort of slip collar on the end of the short shaft coming off the pump that the longer shaft slides and locks into.. post a picture..

It's a melling oil pump, and it looks similar to this:

I only saw the pump and the drive shaft. I didn't see any sort of slip collar. The oil pump is at Jeff's dad's place, and I forgot to bring my camera with me. I will try to snap some pictures next time.

That style of pump shaft doesn't use the plastic lock collar and ahouldn't need it

Thanks. My concern is that there is nothing to keep the longer drive shaft from coming off the short shaft on the oil pump. In my case, the drive shaft doesn't lock onto the short shaft. It merely slides over the short shaft without any type of resistance.

I think once you get it in the block Richard it won't fall out anymore.

My dad called me last night on this topic as you were posting it. 99% sure it can't be put in from the top side.

Do you know the part number is? Because I'm pretty sure the Melling Select Series comes with the pump drive shaft.
You don't want one of the failure prone M55's which don't come with the drive shaft!

I don't have the part number for it on paper. It came with the engine block from RPM, and it came with the pump drive shaft. I'll take a look to see if the part number is on the pump itself.

Oh crap, I have the cheap Melling M-55 oil pump:

There are reports of it breaking due to the new thinner casting. Looks like I need to order another oil pump instead.

your pump is the performance melling select Richard. We stopped selling the standard 55A pumps awhile back just so people didn't have to worry about their oil pump failing.

I'm curious though. If it's a Performance Melling Select, then why does it say "M-55" on it?

they do that. I've bought only select pumps for a while and that is the way they look. The select is now what used to be the std M55A before they started making the cheaper lighter castings.
