I'm in the process of overhauling the steering on my 93. I've done all new Moog components, Jeep steering shaft, firewall bearing mod, ZQ8 steering box, and remanufactured power steering pump. The shaft seal was leaking on the original pump, and unfortunately it was tossed away.

My problem is that I'm on my second ps pump in three days. The system works fine initially but after a few minutes just idling in the driveway I lose power steering. The internal flow control valve keeps seizing up in the bore therefore completely bypassing pressure. I've tried one Cardone pump from Advance and one Duralast from Autozone, and they both do the same thing.

The entire system gets flushed every time I've swapped pumps, and the Prestone fluid is crystal clear. Should I install an inline filter anyway?

I'm pretty fed up with these crappy remanufactured pump and I would like to install a new GM pump or something much better than Cardone or Duralast.

What do you gentlemen recommend? I would hate to keep installing pumps especially since that pulley is a pain to remove.

Look into an agr pump. We have been using them for years on 4x4s with big tires.

Something fishy going on. If I understand when, for example, you turn to lock and hold you'll hear the pump bypassing. Come off lock and it stops. I assume fluid is then flowing through the gear. Are you able to turn it to lock, force the pump to bypass, come off lock to "normal" and still have power steering?Are you seeing anything in the valve that would cause it to seize?

Something is causing that valve to seize. I did a search and found this. It's much better at explaining what I was attempting. It might help figure out what's going on.

I replaced my gear this winter and it took some time to get all the air out. I know what you mean about the pulley. Since you're about to install a 3rd pump maybe that's not it. I wonder if it could be the gear?

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I did some more research on this particular problem. It seems that the tolerances on these remanufactured pumps are so tight that any small amount of contamination causes the valve to stick.

So I ended up installing a third pump yesterday. I went with a Cardone pump from O'reillys that includes the reservoir. I also installed an inline filter from Cardone on the return line. Finally, I re-flushed the whole system and used Castrol ATF instead of Prestone PS fluid.

I'm now on my 4th time driving the truck and no issues so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

DO YOU HAVE HEADERS OR STOCK ONE .BECAUSE THE RPM HEADER ARE TO CLOSE TO THE PUMP AND THEY KILL THE PUMP I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND I RESOLVE IT BUY WRAPPING THE HEADER AROUND THE PUMP BUT I HAVE HEADER . DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU. HOPE IT HELPS.:tup::tup::tup:

I do have a set of Kenne Bell headers and they have DEI heat wrap on them. The car didn't run long enough for the exhaust to get hot and affect the pump. Although I could see an unwrapped exhaust affecting the steering fluid temp after a hard run. I guess they sort of knew what they were doing when they put the ps cooler in there. As of now, going on the third day, everything is working just fine. So: use ATF and install a Cardone inline filter.

do u have a part # for the inline filter? I'd like to put one on mine.
