Spark plug from hell

Ty started missing today. #3 cylinder wasn't firing. Pulled plug and looks like toast. Has under 1000 miles.

Why is the electrode bent to touch the other electrode?

I have no idea. I was data logging doing a 0-70 run. I bumped up the boost a little and the fuel. Boot off of intercooler piping came off and then my check engine light flashed for knock(turbotweak chip). Right when I heard the pop from the boot I let off. Tightened all the boots and restarted and then it was missing.

Something had to hit it. It won't bend by itself. Once shorted it became fuel fouled. Does the ground electrode show any damage in the "bend" area that we can't see in the pic?

I don't know the number but I fairly sure that with a projected nose plug is quite close to the piston.

It actually looks like part of the electrode is missing.

What do the other plugs look like? If the others "look" like part, IE the end, of the ground electrode is missing or burned away that could be serious pre-ignition. Were you logging? What did that show.

I haven't had a chance to look at the log yet. That was the only plug I pulled. I did the water on the manifold trick and that's how I narrowed it to #3. I will pull some others tomorrow and check them. Thanks for your replies

Get yourself one of those cheap laser temp readers from Harbor Frieght, works much better.

It will be a good idea to also do a cylinder compression
check you may have a damaged # 3 piston ..

Is it possible that you hit the electrode (especially since it was #3), and closed it to almost touching when you installed it, and the heat made it soft enough to flex or build up slag and touch the center electrode.

Usually that occurs from an object hitting the ground strap. Over enough time, detonation can close that gap as well, but you would have seen signs a long time ago.

It could have been. These plugs have a little more than 1000 miles on them so that may have been the issue. Running fine now with the plug change

Well I'd say the oil on the plug is from the valve guide seals being worn...fix that and go from there. ....I believe you can buy the tool that plugs into the head and floods it with air to hold the valves up for like $8-10 on amazon. I'm doing mine soon and converting to better valve guide seals....I'll let you know how it goes and do a write up also.
