Serious build would be top of the line pistons sealed rings, nitrided crank, new cam, new heads l35s vortec brodix pontiac, 4 bolt main, new headers, turbo, downpipe, wastegate, larger injectors, new fuel rails, fpr, F.A.S.T for tuning etc...
Start here for an idea of what parts you will need to have a complete rebuild kit. Mike has a great selection of SyTy specific parts for exactly this on his site. its very easy and its all there. hopefully you get an idea. Oh and, nothing there is low quality, the lower priced options are still much better than most rebuilt shopd will ever use, stick with them for sure. Make sure someone reputable does it, PLEASE, and make sure to use good parts ARP bolts, JE pistons, Eagle rods. A simple build is replacing the pistons rings rods bearings, freshening the cam and crank, clean up the top end (valve job, new springs etc.), Reassemble and whallah!Victor said:

What are your goals exactly? I have done my motor about 3 times now. First time the oil never got checked and at 119K it dumped. I popped it out and rebuilt it with new pistons(speed pro I think), re-used rods and crank, all new seals and bearings. Now this motor lasted for 2 1/2 years and actually let go because the oil pick up tube fell out somehow. If not for that I am positive that motor wouold still be going strong today, it was solid for what it was. Then I rebuilt it again and my machine shop betrayted me and did not grind my crank they just polished it and after 100 miles on the new motor I got a knock. At this point I had to buy a new crank and went to a different machine shop. I reused the pistons and rods again because they were in pretty good shape. I did not have the heads done though and on top of that, I didnt tear the whole block down, just yanked the crank out and replaced the bearings. Unfortunately I was in a position where i just didnt have the time and needed the truck to run so I could get it out of where I was living. It lasted a whole 6 months. At the end of the summer in 05 (November ) it dumped on me as I knew it would. I spent the winter rebuilding it properly as I know how and am good at. Had everything done. I did however, re-use my rods an pistons. Im at 195,000 miles and I run about 18psi frequently. Not sure what my truck runs as I havnet been to the track in two years but maybe that gives you an idea of what is possible for cheap. I say as long as your tune is good, the motor gets machined properly, its assembeld properly, you should be just fine with stockish parts. And as long as youre not interested in modding hten youll really be ok.

i'll be asking myself the same question this winter..
stock motor, ran strong, has 120k on it.. while its out what should i do to it!?
If i wanted to go super cheap, i'd check the cylinders and bolt on the rebuilt set of heads I have, replace the oil pump, and button it up..
but the "while its out" mentality kicks in and new rods, pistons, rings comes to mind.. the problem is my wallet, don't know if it can afford it.
