Which T/C

Asked 1000 times more over already. I just can't find a difinitive answer yet in my searches. I am stock now with a nicely rebuilt transmission. But the shop put the wrong t/c in the truck. On the stock 2100 stall I could build 10psi on launch(why it died I am sure). Now, I can only build 4psi. So he is going to put a new converter in for free(labor). I just need to determine what I want. I want to do a stage 1 or 2 upgrade, but will not be till later this year(my D/D when it rains) So I will need to drive it on occasion. What would be the best stall and brand to get. I have seen everything from 9/11 to Yank converters. Let me know! Thanks

Nor will you.

There are lots of different manufacturers and types of converters. Everybody likes their own brand.

How much money you have to spend will make a big difference on what you buy. You can spend anywhere from $300 to $1000+.

You need to also decide your stall speed, which is based on what cam you have, what turbo you have, desired street manners, and general performance goals.

Armed with that info, you can make a better decision.

Re: Which T/C

I was kinda looking to see what others have used (I like personal opinions/experience) I am completely stock and only looking to do the rpm stage1 turbo within the next year. I was gathering a 2400 stall about be good. Now I see that their are 9.5, 10.5 with single disk, 3 disk, 5 disk? I want something that will stall good for stock and the slightly bigger turbo.

Go with a Yank 3200. I love my Yank! mine is a 3600 and it is the most awesome converter I have ever driven on. You can't even tell that there is a stall at all until you put the power down.

Hughes 3k stall w/ lock-up.

Don't forget an auxillary trans cooler... Your newly rebuilt transmission will thank you.

Re: Which T/C

I have a cooler upfront, disconnected from the stock and plumbed thru a front mount one. 12x12(Haven't seen temps above 140). I can have one that high with a stock setup? I assumed that the bigger the turbo, the bigger the required stall.

Re: Which T/C

Wow, I thought that their were specifics for the converters. I received an email from two companies and both were completely different.

Precestion industries suggested a 9.5 inch converter with 32-3400 stall

Hughes suggested 22-225LHD which is rated for 2500 stall.

Opinions to why each would suggest such a different stall in which they were provided same information about the truck?

Re: Which T/C

take an average....2800.

That's what I have and it's good with my GT35R.

If your stall is too high then you'll be overboosting and your rpm will be too high for your tc so your mileage will be very poor.

Re: Which T/C

I believe I have a slightly higher stall TC I'll give your for FREE NINETY NINE that came out of my Sy with a reman trans. I know nothing about it, except its cleans works 100% and felt like it stalled higher than the stockers on my Ty's. I think it would be close to your desired 2400 range, but again, I have no way of detrmining it by the funky numbers on it. It's in Nor Cal, but I can bring it down to your neck of the woods later in the week if I come down to LA.

And if he passes, I guess I got a free TC for anyone who wants one in San Jose, CA :)

Re: Which T/C

I have noticed a drop in mileage since I had my trans redone. I was averaging just over 18 before and now around 16 1/2 sometimes 17. I also had someone vadalize my tonneau cover and haven't had it on, so I was maybe chalking up the mileage to that.

Jeff! Nothing tickles me better than a free t/c. I just want the great stomach squish feel that I used to have when I do a great launch which now I don't have :-( waaaaa

Re: Which T/C

Don't go higher stall your combo needs, you will lose mileage & top end MPH if it is too loose & not locked up.

If your combo is not much more than a stock engine,2800 max stall. Anything more than that is a waste.:2cents:

I am thinking for my stock engine, but a 12 CM turbine housing I want as tight as possible 2600-2800 range would be perfect & should get me easily into the 11's.

Re: Which T/C

Well I am going to have to say that I was disappointed with Precision Industries response suggesting I need a 3500 stall for a stock truck(I did give them cam specs, weights, everything) I am thinking Hughes is going to be the winner. Not to expensive $450 and I hope that this will fix my sluggish launches.
