question for north, northeast members

I've been thinking about looking at a new place to live for awhile..

northern, nj is extremely expensive and I am working way to hard to just be scraping by..

I've been looking at upstate, NY and a few other areas, i'd like to stay in the northeast but it seems like there are very few places that are cheaper to live in and still have a decent job market.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Michigan /Ohio isn't too bad. You can get a nice place for a reasonable price. The job market isn't too bad either. What jobs are you into?

information technology, system administration (windows, active directory, sms, etc), network administration (cisco routers/switches, pix firewall, checkpoint firewalls, etc..)

I've done everything from helpdesk, to desktop support, to high end network support, system administration..

my girlfriend is in HR, she would also be looking for a position in the area

while ohio is cheaper, I'm not entirely sure we want to go that far west.. once you get past PA and even western PA, people start to get weird

Yep... you are right about weird. It seems thet people have lost there sense of common courtesy. That drives me nuts!!! I work for DTE Energy Nuclear and there are spots in IT and HR. If you decide to come this far check out the website for open positions.

I wasn't trying to offend anyone, it just seems like the east coast, mid west, mid east, sourth, and west coast are all totally different countries with totally different ways of life and what not... Then again, that is what makes this country.

I am a contractor at Citibank (IT) , just moved from Wall St to Jersey City.
You ever consider working in Jersey City?

If you don't mind a commute you can live outside boston area for not too much and work in Boston for big bucks. I'm partial to CT since I've lived here my entire life. Property might be cheaper than NJ depends on where you go NY suburbs are expensive. You could probably get a well paying job. You should come to CT since we need more trucks up here. NJ has too many. :rotf:

You have a broad resume so I'm sure you could get a job up in MA/CT no problem

VT is a good place to live (me and the wife have been thinkig about alot lately) my cousin and vermonty (adam) work up at ibm and i guess the pay is decent too land is cheap up where my uncle lives there were 2 very nice houses sold with 5 acres of land on top of the hill overlooking CAN A DUH one sold for 190 the other was 205 !

denny, I actually interviewing in jersey city awhile back.. did very well.. they called me back after I had already accepted another position... The commute from where I live to jersey city is horrid, actually one of the main reasons i'm considering moving is the traffic in the area.

The Nyc/northern nj area is great to live in, but it is increasingly fast paced and expensive..

traffic just keeps getting worse and nothing seems to be getting better, taxes go up, everything continues to get more expensive, it is just very difficult to afford to live here. Maybe its my fault for buying a house at 25 years old, but I don't understand how anyone can afford to live around here without making $150k

as i've told you many times.....Central PA is cheap as hell. And contrary to your beliefs, there are IT jobs to be found. I have a couple friends making decent/good $ in the area/in that field.

I spent 4 years in the boston area.. I loved it, but I don't really want to go back, it isn't much cheaper than where I am now and the job market doesn't look so good.. CT is super expensive as well, it seems like the whole of the northeast is very expensive to live in.

Rochester/Buffalo area suck...cold as hell, winters suck wang, and terrible syty weather...

guess its good for cold air, but then you get to drive in salt to get that benefit. Not recommended, but cheap as hell. Come from Seattle, a 150K house in Rocehster would be around 450K in Seattle at least.

Keep in mind NY is a blue state to the bone...your property taxes are aweful.........but hey, more taxes for the good of all they say. F'n liberal freaks.

I don't consider myself a liberal or a conservative, but I do think that the blue states are 110% better than the red states

as for the rochester area, I was looking at houses and I can live in a mansion for what I am paying for my current ranch.. Winters don't really bother me, eventually if everything goes well, i'd consider living in florida during the horrid northeast winters.

driving is salt isn't a problem, thats why I have a daily driver.

I agree 100%, I also have a friend that lives in Ft lauderdale.. he is a oracle DB admin, he loves it.. is trying to buy a house in canada to live at during the hot florida summer months (his wife is from canada)

I'm just starting to realize that the NYC area is a complete mess, traffic is horrible, massive amounts of people, never enough jobs.. super expensive.. I just don't understand how people can afford to live around here...
