Ive had a 160 deg. thermo. in the truck for a while now. During hot days and whenever im beating the truck around the temps shoot up tp 200-220. On cool nights when im taking it easy the temp stays normal. Why does it spike up like that? I did a search and came up w/ nothing

How long have you had the thermostat ?

Id take it out and check it in a pot of hot water to see if it it opening fully. I had the same problem once and fortunatly that was the first thing i checked. when i replaced it i realized that the old one was actually opening higher as it got older.

hope it helps

I run a 160* here in Louisville, KY in my Modded Sy. I see 170-180* at the most. Right now its ike 905 ish and over 100* out with the heat index and I have no problems. You may just need to flush your radiator and get a new thermo. Run distilled water and even water wetter or 40* below and you should be chill'in....

FWIW dept. Mine was doing the same thing. Leaky top hose at the thermostat end. Was getting air in the system. New hose fixed things.

The thermostat controls minimum engine temp, the capacity of the cooling system controls maximum engine temp.

I've seen the symptoms that you describe before and it usually turns out to be the viscous clutch on the fan.

The are supposed to lock up and drive the fan depending on the temp of the air that comes through the rad. Sometimes they will almost freewheel and cause an overheat condition.

To test the fan rev the engine when it's warm to hot and feel the airflow from the fan. It should start to move a fair bit of air within 10 or so seconds. If you feel no difference in the airflow or can't notice a change in the noise of the fan replace the clutch.

Another thing to know is that I'd recommend getting another from GM. The aftermarket ones that I've encountered are nothing but trouble. They are usually of poor quality and fail well before their time.

The GM one is usually a bit more money but you will save time and money in the long run.
