At the alternator, in park, when you increase the rpms does the voltage at the alternator decrease....mine goes from 14.3 to 13.7? What would cause the engine to die while idling? The rpms drop to about 500 and the voltage drops to about 10 volts....Is this electrical or mechanical? Where would I begin to look for the problem? All help is greatly appreciated as I am tired of having 93 Typhoon trophy.....Thanks

Brand new alternator from motorcity...160 amp....it does produce a whine in my stereo system so I wonder if the vr is shunting the AC....

If your engine has had an undersize crank pulley installed, the RPM at the alternator are lower than the alternator can support 14.5 volts. This can bee easily seen by increasing the RPMs on the engine. When they come up, the voltage comes up.

I suggest that you go to the parts store that will allow you to exchange alternators until you find one that works at low RPMs.

I would see if the belt is slipping at high RPM`s. That would cause the voltage to drop after idle, under load.
