2002 4.3 Vortec short block for replacement

I am wondering if there is a reason why not to use a 2002 4.3 Vortec motor (shortblock) as a base for a motor build I am planning. I already have the long block anyone need a set of vortec heads?

I want to build a motor before pulling my motor out of my truck to limit the down time of my truck.
Plans:
23* bowtie heads
eagle rods
30 over bore if needed
JE pistons dished
Big cam just not sure what yeat any suggestions?
stock crank
4 bolts main caps
head studs
Stock ported intake to match the heads
70mm turbo (bigger if neede)
injectors not sure on the size? 85?

For a Vortec Shortblock, you need

-a Different Cam (not as big of deal if going with a custom cam)
-a Different Timing Chain (not a lot of options)
-to Modify the Vortec Oil Pan for a turbo oil return
-to Modifiy/run different transmission lines
-to modify starter (elong holes), because the flex plate is spaced different

The Knock Sensor hole needs to be re-drilled/tapped or relocated as well.

Some say the Vortec block is weaker, but I am not 100% sure of that, the oil pan should provide some addition stiffening.

IMO I am going to rebuild a Vortec short block when I rebuild mine, because I aleady did the conversion. In you case, I would find an older block and rebuild that. Your going to spend more than $50 and more time trying to make it work.

You can find regular old style 4.3's everywhere for 50.-100.00

If you were just wanting to put one in for mild stuff in the 12-13's I'd say go for it.

TO run 10's consistantly with out breaking stuff I'd get a bowtie..and a billet crank but that's me being

safe and not wanting to be popping the engine out and break stuff all the time. It can be done on stock block and crank but I doubt it'll live a long life with 10second passes and daily driving abuse.

Astro vans.. Cab's(Caprice's) S-10's,Jimmys,Blazers,1500series trucks Boats... lots of those.

I'm sure I'm missing a few other vehicles. But that should be enough.. Happy hunting!

96 and later are all Balance shaft blocks. There were some balance shaft blocks from 92-95 but otherwise 95 and and earlier are the non balance shaft motors.
