61mm turbo?

a month ago i pulled off a 61mm turbo and put a 72mm turbo on my other car. so now i just have this 61 sitting in my garage collecting dust. i have about 178,000 miles on the stock turbo of my Ty so i figured its about time i replace it. so my question is can i run my 61mm Precision on the stock Ty manifold? i dont know what size flange is on the Ty but my 61mm is a T4.
i know i have to upgrade my fuel pump, injectors, fmic, and intake. are there anyother things i must have to make the 61 work safely and put out optimal power? what kind of FMU is everyone running?
id love to be putting out 550-600hp in my Ty

thanks

Re: 61mm turbo?

Why are you using a different intake manifold? Or are you talking a carb style?

Your not going to be putting down 550, or even making 550 with just bolting up a 61mm turbo, even with all the bolt ons. Your going to need heads, a cam, a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, and a good tune at the least.

If its a true T4 flange it'll be to big for the stock manifolds. Just buy a different exhaust housing for the turbo.

everything is stock right now. so i mean when i put the turbo on i want to change the intake.

a 61mm Precision turbo can flow enough for 550-600hp. i do not want to change the stock turbo because like i said i have this turbo just sitting here collecting dust. so if possible id like to put it to use.

but you did answer my questions on what else i would need to achieve the maximum output for that turbo. i do realize that i will loose a bit from the auto tranny and the awd.

i asked about what FMU people are using because i realize i need that for a good tune.

and basically waht you are saying is that i cant run the 61 w/ a T4 flange on the stock mani. so i have to change it out for a mani that will fit.

In all honesty man, you need to read and do a lot of searching on this board.

Re: 61mm turbo?

If you want to run stock fuel rails you can get an accufab FPG from Raceprovenmotors. I would probly recommend either the intank double pumper, or aeromotive external fuel pump for those hp levels at the wheels. Its going to be tuff obtaining those numbers on stock heads and cam. They don't flow very well. I would say do the late model "vortech" swap, and probly the comp 415/422 cam. Good tunning software a lot of the guys on the board here have gotten into (including myself) is Tuner Pro RT run with the Motes Ostrich. The stock computer is good for 10's with proper tuning.
You will be able to run the t4 turbo on the t3 manifolds with an adapter (might be cheaper). Or you will have to swap out the exhaust housing for the syty t3 avalible from precision. Hope that helps a little.

Re: 61mm turbo?

any syty headers available will be the t3 flange so a t3-t4 adapter would be needed . Thats going to throw off your downpipe angles and a semi-custom peice will have to be made . For the work you'll have into it , youd be better off selling that thing and buying an appropriate fitting turbo .

Re: 61mm turbo?

Big turbo does not equate to instant power. If anything, it will have a lag problem, and once it does build boost it will be at the top of the RPM range, where these engines don't make any power. First thing is to do is tune the truck so it's running 100%, and go from there. The engine needs to be built and adapted to take full advantage of the flow of that larger turbo, and the operating range.

ive searched and searched and searched and found NOTHING about saying you can only run a turbo that has a T3 flange. i did not find anything that said stock is a T3. thats why i said i have a T4 flange. so but thanks for being absolutly no help. theres always that one guy who has a million posts that has to flex a little emuscle and be unhelpfull. afterall isnt a forum for people to share help and ideas?
i am not new to turbos or high hp vehicles. or how turbos work and the supporting mods needed. i am new to domestics and Ty's and realize that there are differences between the different applications. for me the 61mm turbo spools like crazy on my vehicle. but apparently its a tad laggy on Sy/Ty's. a great tune is absolutly the most important thing yoiu can do to a vehicle. thats why i asked what FMU everyone is running. everyone else but blk00z28 was helpfull. so thank you everyone else for helping a noobie to this forum. it looks like my 61mm is going to be a nice looking paper weight for the time being.

pretty sure he's referring to the air intake tube...not the intake manifold.

Re: 61mm turbo?

We don't need/use FMUs. You're not really "tuning" anything with an FMU, anyway.

There's a bit more to the swap than just a bolt-on thing, as others have mentioned.
Turbo flange, downpipe, and probably oil and water plumbing are all different.
Then you start talking injectors, a wideband and a tune for the stock computer, and probably a transmission, since the power range you're looking for will kill a stock trans. Also, the stock torque converter will be too tight for that turbo.

I would certainly not recommend this as a first mod... you're asking for a dead motor, in addition to the dead trans. There's kind of a progression that you go though, and the first thing is to get your stocker running well. I've got money in my pocket that says it probably isn't.

A good running stocker (Ty) will run mid-hi 13s (real low 14s on a bad day) at flatlander altitudes, and doesn't stumble, surge, or die at stoplights. There are soooooo many poorly running trucks out there- I'd venture to say that most of them on the road today aren't running properly.

Get yours running correctly, and stabilized... then start looking for things to modify. Stock turbo Tys have been well into the mid 12s, so there's a lot you can do before you start throwing turbos and FMICs at it.

I hope you not using FMU on you other turbo vehicle, maybe you mean engine management system?

You could install a 61mm turbo on your Ty, without diving into the motor. It could make in the 450-500 hp range, however with 178K mile engine (the mileage is getting up their) and the transmission/propshaft/motormounts will need some attension as well.

Re: 61mm turbo?

sorry, when i say FMU i mean some type of standalone fuel management unit. im running an F-Con Vpro on my other vehicle because the stock comp cannot keep up with what im running.a wideband is a definet must in order to tune it properly. im just trying to figure out what is the best and most widely used fuel management you guys are using. and if i even need it if i run stock turbo. but if i decide to upgrade turbos, at what point do i have to run a fuel management unit?
i know with that type of power the stock trany will not hold up. im honestly not looking to make some crazy hp numbers out of my Ty. i just have this turbo sitting here so was thinking of throwing that in there if it was possible without to much trouble. and the engine was rebuilt and has only 500 miles on it.
i have done tons of searching, but you can only learn so much from conversations that dont have excatly the answers im looking for.

Re: 61mm turbo?

do you mean stand alone engine management? fuel and spark or just fuel?

when I hear FMU i think supercharged mustang with a FMU plumbed into the return line to close it off and jack up fuel pressure in the rail.

sorry FMU was the wrong thing to say. and sorry also for jumping the gun and getting snappy. i understand where people are comming from when such noob questions are asked. the domestic world is seriously like a whole new ball game for me. its like im learning a foreign language but its english! haha
but yes i mean stand alone engine management. like AEM or F-Con Vpro etc. im just wondering is it necessary to run one or is the stock comp up to the task?

Re: 61mm turbo?

Your first step should be some datalogging with tunerpro rt or datamaster . See if the motors running 100% and go from there . There isnt really a set time of x.xx and you need a standalone fuel management system . Some guys run 10's on the stock ecm and you dont sound like you want to exceed that .

With sytys , more isnt always better or quicker . A small list of well matched upgrades with a good tune will get you where you want to be . The longer your around here soaking up what you can , youll see what works for others , what doesnt , and which mods are really worth the money .
