8.5 rearend

I bought a 3.42 geared 8.5 inch rearend today for the Blazer project. It came from a 98 2wd V6 5 speed Blazer. It measures 59" hub to hud and 38.5" ctr to ctr of the spring pads. Looks like a direct bolt in. We should know tomorrow, I plan on slapping it in after work tomorrow.

I am sooooooo anxious to get this thing up and running.

Re: 8.5 rearend

The rearend went right in-was a direct bolt in. I didn't have time to look at them a lot, but the Ebrake cables are different-not sure what it will take to make that work.

Re: 8.5 rearend

if the rear is going in a typhoon get e brake cables from a 2dr zr2 blazer

if the rear went in a syclone get cables for a standard cab zr2 pickup

congrats on the swap

Re: 8.5 rearend

Did you have to shorten your driveshaft any? I thought the yoke was positioned a bit further forward with the 8.5" rears? Also are you sure it wasn't from a 4x4 blazer? I always though the 2wd rears were 54-3/8" hub to hub...

I dont know for sure that it came from a 2wd because I didn't take it out of the vehicle, but the research I did indicated that the 2wd V6 with a 5spd would be 59" wide overall so thats what I searched for on car-part.com (a junkyard locator service) Evidently the 2wd with a 5sp is rare but it showed that a yard close to me had it so I just wrote down the stock number and then drove to the place. When I gave them the number they typed it in and said, yeah we have that in stock, 98 model 2wd S10 Blazer. It may have to do with the 5 speed thing, not sure but I am just glad I didn't have to make my own housing, this project has involved enough fabbing as it is !!

Re: 8.5 rearend

FYI.......If you get a disk brake rearend at a salvage yard, be sure to get the brakes with it. I knew this one was missing the calipers but I thought, "no biggie. I'll just pick some up" The core charge alone on the damn things is $50 apiece. Then the caliper bolts.......$100 from the stealer !!! Then the caliper mounting brackets......$90 apiece list price. This stuff can add up in a hurry !!

Luckily I found everything I need used at a friends salvage yard today for $50 so all is good.
