Too many ebay units are failing. They are more than willing to fix it. I send it out. 3 days out. They work on it. 2 to 3 days. 3 days back. Could go out again(up to 20% failure rate) because of bearing failure issues. I'd rather just get a new unit.

Yea don't know what im going to do yet still... I have my stocker back on now and it's running the efan, hid etc fine just wanted more power at but may just stick with it for now as funds are really low.

Oh and my ebay alt didn't have any problem with the bearings, it just stopped putting out :)

no noise and turns freely so who knows

Re: alternator

I think the ebay units are just junkyard units with 140 amp goodies from www.alternatorparts.com

The first thing I noticed was noise and engine vibration. Thought it was the fans. Disconnected one of the fans. No noise. Thought I found it. Back agan. Turn engine off. Fans on, no noise. Crap. Start it back up, growl, whine, whirr. Laid my hand on the alternator. BINGO. Got inside, noticed truck was sitting at 10 volts. So it's not charging either. Initially thought it was just bearing but it definitely not charging either. I should've known something was up when I opened the box and the pulley was spraypainted black with a big dent on one side.
The 144 is supposed to have higher charge rate at idle as well. My truck is totally stock as far as engine clearance stuff. I'll let you know as soon as it comes in as I've got to get my truck back on the road.

How did that clear on the backside? I have stock valvecovers and everything.
I have the one battery wire and the single wire in the harness. Is that a direct hookup?

Yes this alternator will clear everything. Not the best view of what you are looking for but here's what it looks like from the top on my bud''s truck. It makes the stocker look puny:

I have the exact same alternator and plan to install it when I ditch the mechanical fan and go electric. They are VERY high quality pieces. It should be noted that these are BRAND NEW alternators, not remanufactured ones. You get to keep your old one and there is no core charge. 91blazins10, now that you own one of these aren't you glad that I told you about them

:) yes, the only thing that needed done to make it fit was to drill out the hole on the left of the alternator bracket to make it line up, then I just got a long bolt and slid it through and tightened it up with a nut on the end.

Re: alternator

If I remember right, the 144 had a bigger hole on that side. That's a simple mod to do to have a reliable setup. This should have no trouble staying cool.

Re: alternator

There it is. Mine just had 3. Guy on the phone said it was 10mm bearing setup. No way. Might explain the bearing failure issue.

Take a look at that page then scroll down to the point that there are 3 pics in a row its the third pic with the pulley and fan removed when they are rotating the housing, if you look you can see 2 of the 3 supports for the bearing the one being right next to the guys finger.

If your alt looks like that then its a small bearing and is more prone to failure if yours has 5 of those "supports" then its the big bearing which are a lot more reliable.
If you take a look at the back of your alt you can see the bearing and a lot of times that bearing will blow up and it is very obvious to see.

The only thing you can do is replace the housing to get the better style, I believe my dad said the s trucks came with the small bearing and the full size trucks usually had the bigger bearing.
I can talk to my dad and see what his work is getting for the housings and provided nothing else is wrong with it thats what it would cost. But some other parts inside could be bad also hard to say without having it in hand.

I did find this website
www.alternatorparts.com
it seems to have all the parts needed to fix the alt.
It may be cheaper to go that route just because of shipping etc but I will have my dad get a price for doing just the housing.

Just found this pic which shows what I'm talking about clear as day.

You will be better off going this route. Wish I'd known about it before:

You can upgrade your own unit to the 140 setup and have a true iceburg body. Mine was just a plain old body(no extra heat disappation) and 8mm bearing. I'm thinking you get what you pay for on the ebay units.

Yea same here 10 volts of loving........... but my alt was brand new when I opened it up no painted pulley or nothing either so it sounds like you got screwed from the start wtf!

So you suggest I pick this up and rebuilt my own? think it'll put out more at idle with this?

Re: alternator

That is the iceberg style. Call them and ask them. You know it'll be more than 10 volts.:( I feel your pain on that one. If you want even MORE at idle, you would have to go to a smaller pulley. They have overdrive pulley's. Surely someone makes a smaller pulley.

Re: alternator

Well no post by me is complete without a few pics, so here they are
icon_lol.gif
:

"10.4 pound CS-130 stocker"

"15.3 pound Quick Start CS-144"

"CS-130 vs. CS-144 side view"

"CS-130 vs. CS-144 front view"

"CS-130 vs. CS-144 rear view"

Lastly, if you choose to run one these high output monsters you NEED to upgrade the wire from your alternator to the battery! The CS-144 puts out 100 AMPS AT IDLE. The stocker is under half that. If you have a truck that is equipped with electric fans, you can probably kill your engine (or come close to it) when you turn them on if the headlights are on and you have a stock alternator. The reason for this is explained on Quick Start's webpage regarding this. The ground wire needs to be addressed as well. I ran a 2 gauge wire from the back of the alternator to the battery on my bud's truck. Which may seem like overkill but, I like to swat flies with sledge hammers.

"2 gauge wire, terminal and crimping tool used for heavy duty CS-144 alternator."

Heh, no you don't. Because if you did, you would spend more time polishing stuff than actually enjoying your truck

! Thanks for the props, you KNOW that I will have a pic of it when it's done

. While I could pay someone else to do the work, it is more satisfying knowing that I did/made something myself...

knock on wood... mine is still performing flawlessly and it took care of all my electrical issues.

My bud who I did the complete AC delete for reports the same.

True polished parts always need a cleaning... and I hear you on the doing-it-yourself thing. I totally agree but you see im lacking the knowledge, tools and time so im all around screwed hahah but I do get to drive my sy whenever I want :)

Well my Ebay alternator went out. Lasted about 1000 miles. Sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it sounds like marbles in a can, sometimes it shounds like a bent fan blade:tdown:

Finally got the BIG AC Delco Cadillac alternator on today. That sucker is BIG. Your stock belt will BARELY be long enough but it WILL go on and tension correctly. The excitation hookup is identical(plastic stock inline connector). You will need a larger connector on the large wire feeding the battery and larger connectors to put onto the CAC wire for Sys and you'll need another larger ring fitting for the other wire on Ty's.

My ebay alternator had melted. I can put up pics but it's weird looking. Everything you can look at inside is burnt black and the plastic fitting around the bearing in the rear had melted and swallowed the bearing race on one side. If you hold it in your hand and spin the pulley it spins freely but will wobble in your hand. There's one noise down. I call the ebay dude and he said I only had a 60% chance of getting an alternator with a good bearing. I think this was more than bearing since everything melted.

Did you guys have to go up in size on the charge wire coming off the alternator that goes to the battery?

Edit: Crap. Thanks Mike. I found your post farther up. Bigger charge wire needed.

Re: alternator

I've had my cs-144 alt in for a while now... works awesome and the charge at idle with my volve fan on full tilt is very impressive... should have done this along time ago honestly and yes you definitely need a larger gauge charge wire or you run the risk of electrical fire plus you won't get al you can out of her.

I forget the numbers but ed hess checked mine out and was really surprised with the readings so i'd recommend this upgrade to anybody and I don't remember it being anything but plug and play install but it's been a little while plus I have a syclone and it's not a stocker :)
