Autocrossing a Sy?

I enjoy autocrossing and open track events, and participate every chance I get with my T/A. My question is how good of an auto-xer is a Sy? Does anyone know what class they run in according to the SCCA Solo II rules? Just curious. By the way, still lookin' for a Sy, let me know if you spot one. Clint

In stock form, they handle like $hit. My co worker, who to used autocross regularly, told me that the SCCA doesn't allow truck in autocrosses. He said they may have changed the rules, but he remembers the arguement in the early 90 about SyTy's.

I ran my Ty in the SCCA autocross in '93. After a few suspension and tire pressure adjustments (and some seat time) I got the FTD (Fastest Time of the Day) against all the other sports cars. Engine was stock. Lowered the rear 2" and installed a rear sway bar and that was it. And if you can catch a rainy day, you will really embarrass the other drivers.

Hey Typhool,
Whats wrong with auto-xing a Sy? I say if you got something, enjoy it. Be it, on a dragstrip, Auto-xing, or road-racing. So long as you maintain and care for it, what harm is done?

I know you'll boil the stock brakes within minutes. I'd say put some Koni's or coil-overs in there, poly everything, drop the rear 2", some 17" or 18" wheels with low-profile tires, and Baer brakes before you even think about autocrossing it. Take some videos for us if you do end up racing it.

Don't use 18" rims when autocrossing, you need some sidewall flex. 16"s are the best size, 17"s work okay, but 18" rims with low profile tires = Spinning!

And there is a guy here who races a Toyota pickup truck, so you could race your Sy, but I dunno about the Ty - they might get concerned if it looked like it was going to roll and ask you to stop. :(

i simply cant imagine it, thats all. It would work and as ssaid, well, but anyways i wouldnt want to do that in a sy or ty.
plus if he is going to get one before me o no , no way, especially for that purpose.

I've done it a few times. The class is f-stock, that puts you in with V8 Camaros, Firebirds, Mustangs and BMW's. I usually finish near the top, I have a few podium finishes. Mods include 17" wheels, rear sway bar and rear lowered 2". All this is supposed to bump me up to SS, but between lenient interpretation of the rules and the fact that no one knows what a Sy is they leave me alone. Most everyone out there has some kind of mod that they allow. SS is a tough class, it includes Vipers and Z-06's.

I do not want a Sy for the sole purpose of making it an auto-x vehicle. I was only curious on how they faired if I wanted to take it for a spin. Please pardon the pun..... Clint

Yes you can autoX a sy or ty, they are allowed and you will be put into ESP or EM with them as you modify the trucks. I would recommend driving the truck first before you start to modify it as the biggest performance gain on a autoX course is the driver. Once you get the hang of driver the truck out there then you can start to mod it. My truck is very competitive out there but it is not stock and I have been road racing for many years. I have logged thousands of miles on road courses and autoX's around the country in different cars but the syclone is one of my favorites.

Chad look at SCCA.ORG for classifications but I can tell you right now that you will be EMOD for sure. Have fun, it is a tuff with some very well built and purpose built machines (sound familiar) haha.

Well Chad, I have to agree with you as I do not see what else we could do to make it any better for that.

Al, are you bringing a truck with a tubular suspension to the Nats? I remember seeing pics of a frame on your site till you removed it.

Id like to see the ladder bar setup as well, I was wondering why you had chosen that rear suspension style over a 4-bar or 4-link, as well as other things.
