Re: B&M Torque Converters ?

ok this thread is old but I want to ask the same question. Im about to throw a 20g 14cm on w/ a stock stall conv. im looking for a VERY CHEAP 2800 lock up would be great, and I wouldnt mind buying used. How would that coverter fare w/ a 20g? The ty is daily driven. Thanks

Re: B&M Torque Converters ?

I ordered a 2800 from jwaller and it was 800 bucks I think. I looked around and asked a lot and with my 20G, 2800 is the best recommended compromise between performance and fuel economy.

Going second hand, you never know what you are going to get.

Re: B&M Torque Converters ?

I will put my :2cents: into the discussion.

Stall Speed is RPM applied a certain torque level. It doesn't mean that the truck won't move before that RPM. The stock Converter is around 2100rpm with our torque levels, if you put the the truck in gear and take your foot off the gas, the truck will move with 600rpm. If you were to floor it from a roll (and the transmission didn't shift) or brake torqued it that is when the RPM's jump up to 2100 rpm.

Now on the difference between cheap and expensive converter. More expensive converter will be more efficient at applying power WOT and it will have less rotationg mass. In Corvette's have seen guy gain a .1-.2 with a good stall converter vs cheap stall with the same Stall RPM. The even more apparent issue is the drivability of a good converter. A cheaper converter will more likely need more gas to get it going, it will also tend to shoot up in RPM under part throttle (ie not boost) if not lockup.

One of the reasons 2800rpm stall is recommend for drivers, is because a good 2800 stall will move when you put it in gear (ie you don't have to give it gas to move) and it will have acceptable part throttle response. A friend of mine had a cheap non lockup 3500 rpm converter in his 350 Camaro (2nd gen), the car wouldn't move until 1500 rpm and in part throttle driving, the throttle shot up to almost 3000rpm.
