Blow off valve Q's

TYRODD

My ass. Look at it.
How helpfull are they on a stock turbo setup? Ive heard them referred to as "insurance for your turbo". Do they sound cool? How much $ am I looking at here?

Thanks,
RJ

I hear they are a waste of money, 90% of them leak and the only purpose for them on our trucks is to make the PSSHHH sound.

The tranny breaker
Automatics doesn't need BOV as much as manual trannys?
The manual drops boost at shifts. The Automatic tranny is automatic and therefore no boost loss occurs
Correct?

I believe the purpose of the blow off valve is to allow excess turbo pressure to be relieved between the turbo and throttle body. For example, when you release the throttle, the throttle body nearly shuts closed, if there is any pressure from the turbo in front of the TB, it has no way to escape other than through the small gap left in the TB, the pressure may try to creep back into the turbo which may make the turbo try to go in reverse=BAD :(

Is my assumption correct, or do I just have a wandering imagination? :)

ya the post above sums it up pretty good...i've also noticed with my BOV that when your staging its easier to keep the turbo spooled (as a result of the air being expelled through the valve rather back into the turbo) -sry if that was slightly ovbious. The only thing you'd need to hook up a BOV on a stock setup would be a fitting like this http://syty.huryde.com/products.htm to run vacum hose to as well as a turbo-IC pipe that you could attatch the valve its self to
just my $0.02

I use one on both of my boosted cars, it all depends if you like replacing turbo bearings. It will never hurt, if you buy a junk one you might have leakage issues. it took me a couple of times before i got mine adjusted right but it was worth it. If you pull your foot off the gas quickley when you are under boost you should get one. PLUS it scares the sh*t out of people.

Might help extend turbo life.
Definately more usefull on a manual trans.
Potential to leak boost.
Makes cool noise.

If you love turbos, how they sound, and have a few bucks sitting around burning a hole: then go for it.

I had a diferent purpose for using one. If your boost control expericences a failure you dont overboost and blow your motor!

I thought this was known as a Bypass valve not a Blow off? Dont you set it to open at like 25psi.

right BOV wont protect your engine.

A pop-off valve does as ed suggested.

I believe a bypass is most often classified as a BOV that routes back into the intake track

ya know you are right.. i goofed on this one earlier...mine is a pop off valve.

sorry

You can use a BOV to control boost if you hook it up correctly...

Do stock turbos have 360-degree thrust bearings or 270?

yea, but Im thinking it'd be a bad idea

Just weld up that internal, slap a BOV on it set it to open around 13#'s and then you would have the worlds fruitiest sounding car ever. (it would be open all the freaking time)

add to that your turbo would be spinning at its full potential putting it under high stress and at the outer bounds of its effeciency range.

umm, from what i know i dont think they work like that.
doesn't there have to be a difference in pressure for them to open up. thats why they open when you let off gas and throttle closes. It's sensing the boost from intake and vacuum from manifold.air is going to take path of least resistance i dont think pushing against a spring is going to be easier than a going thru a intake
Right?
and yes bypass valve route air back thru intake. usually they use these on MAF cars cause if the vent to atmos the car will run rich. i guess unless the BOV where before the MAF, I guess? well i am just talikng out my a$$.

It is a pressure differential that causes them (bov) to open, The only way it could leak is if the seal is bad as under boost the *vac* line puts more pressure on the seal along with the base spring.

i like the noise so i put on on my sy. i used a hks bov. i do see a faster spool if i let off the gas and get right back in it. plus from what i was told it helps the life of the turbo. plus it gets the rices to snap there necks and drop there jaw.
