I'm pretty excited.

I was looking at my 700R4 sitting on the ground and saying to myself "I hope I don't have to put this thing back in the truck" ;)

I know you said you were going to post instructions on how to install these input shafts. Can you give me a heads up on any special tools needed so I can go buy them ahead of time??

Oh, and I too appreciate the work you do for the small community we have. I think it's great and if ever I'm able to return the favor, I'd be happy to do so

OK. Go to this link:

http://www.primegears.net/gallery/BW4472-rebuild?page=1

Start at #1, follow it all the way to the end. Lube all seals with transgel or vasoline or transmission fluid. Dexron III is the fluid to use in this case. Clean EVERYTHING. You'll need the impact and a gloved hand to get the pinion nut off. Retorque at 90 pounds. Case half bolts are 15mm. Torque all bolts that go into the aluminum case to 35 foot pounds. Use a thin bead of black rtv on all case sealing surfaces. This is an easy case. There are over 100 pictures. If you still don't understand this case after have over 100 step by step pics, you need to take it to have it professionally serviced.
This case uses a one blue link back chain.
Again, clean the gunk from the output shaft, planetary, bearing in the output shaft, lube hole in the output shaft, lube holes in the input shaft if reusing the old one, and get ALL of the crud out of the ring gear that the output shaft is snap ringed to. Failure to remove this stuff WILL result in bearing or planetary failure due to lube starvation and friction (like 320 grit sand paper on all surfaces).

These are all gone. I'll post up when the last unit has been shipped. The only one's left here are:

Eric's
Big Dave's has been installed in the T-case and will ship with it.
Lil Qik's will go out with his kit.
Rodger's (he'll pick it up with his trans)

I have recently discovered that if you have a 2wd long spline output shaft, you can cut it off and use it with this transfer case setup. What you do is put the PG plate on, the stock syty adaptor and then put a straight edge across the adaptor and mark the shaft where they intersect. Put tape around the shaft at this point. Tape off/bag up the rear of the trans. You don't want any metal dust getting into the trans. Use an 1/8" cutoff wheel and cut the shaft off on the transmission side of the tape you put on. Deburr the shaft when you are done. Test fit the case. It should push all the way on by HAND. If not, you may not have cut it short enough.
If your output shaft looks like this, it will NOT work!!!!

See how it has an O-ring? The LONG spline shaft is splined ALL the way down and has NO o ring.
I cannot find a picture of one of these shafts anywhere. I'll have to take a pic next time I get one.

Here's a shot of the 32 spline shaft TOP.

Compared to the stock shaft bottom.

You're talking about the 4l80 RV shaft correct?

I use these on my 4x4 conversions since you can cut them to any length you want.

Re: BW4472 32 input shafts. All slots filled.

Well, my local track opened yesterday and I drove the Blazer there, made several passes, and drove it back out. Thats something I tried to do last year but never succeeded with the 27 spline output shaft. So I am confident in saying that Georges 32 spline setup is WAY better than the old system.

I ran the same numbers as the last time out at the end of last season (which I was hoping to do since I havent tuned on it or anything) I think the best pass of the day was 6.91 at about 102 mph (1/8th mile) The last pass of the day I decided to kick it in 2wd and do a burnout so I could try leaving with a little more boost. I heated up the back tires then engaged the front diff and ran my best 60 ft ever.....a 1.56 I am happy with that for now. As soon as I get the time and more inportantly the $$$ I will upgrade the fuel system and crank up the power. I am shooting for 6.2 or so in the 1/8th.

Anyways, thanks yet again George for building these Tcase shafts !!

You guys are very welcome. I knew this would be the fix. Its just very expensive unfortunately. I know some were concerned about the wall thickness, but it's just not an issue. With the material chosen and the way it responds to heat treat, it's just a very very strong arrangement.

YES! That's the shaft. Nice pic.
Transtar has to search for that and they charge $50 but it needs to be checked for straightness.
I looked that shaft up on GMparts direct:
GM PART # 24204289
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $207.81
OUR PRICE: $123.19

Re: BW4472 32 input shafts. All slots filled.

Sent out David Saunder's last week.

Getting ready to ship Big Dave's stuff out.
Working on Rodger's. Hopefully get it done today.
Kelly Kingery's is done. Just need to ship it all out.

You guys that have these shafts, how do you feel about it being part of the kit? Basically do away with the 27 spline cut down and just make it so the 32 spline setup is the only option? It will make the kits more expensive but it will make it bulletproof and make it so a junkyard 80e will bolt in.
I'm weighing the fact that a teardown is not manditory so that cost is saved in relation to the more expensive material and machining of the 32 spline T-case shaft. You guys tell me. It'll take the cost of the kit upwards of $2000. Right around that. Every component is custom and it's just frigging expensive to do.

Big NOTE!!!

I just realized this wasn't said before.
IF you are using a 1991 to 1996 unit that has both lube ports next to each other at the FRONT of the trans, you MUST get an output shaft that has lube holes in it. I'll put up pics of what I'm talking about. Failure to do so will result in geartrain burnup in less than 300 miles. This shaft and part number will work for 1997 and up units with no problem. Basically look for a trans that has one lube port up front and one lube port approx half way back on the trans.

So is there a long splined shaft you can use for the older transmissions?

Re: Important info for buyers

Yeah. It's the RV transmission output shaft but you need an older one that has the lube holes close to the bearing surface area. When I called GM for a part number, it was no longer available, so you'll have to use Transtar or Dacco or WIT and specify the lube holes be present for the older units. Unless you get one of the ones posted above and have the two lube holes machined into it.

Hey, I just looked it up and it popped up:

8661634
Long Heavy Duty

Wait. You didn't want one because the sidewall was too thin......;)

I never said I didn't want one. I was only questioning the wall thickness which looks pretty stout in the pictures. Like I said, if Chris runs this behind his turbo V8 then its plenty strong for me! I'd be interested in the shaft if one becomes available or you make another batch down the road. I have three 4L80's going in 3 of my vehicles thus the reason I have the RV shaft. Thats good to know about the holes. I don't remember seeing holes in the early 2wd shafts I took out but I will have to look. Don't you have to do something with an oil plug on the very back of the 2wd transmission too?

Between someone totaling my daily driver (GSX) and blowing up the engine in the new GSX because of damn $20 balance shaft belt that also took out the timing belt, money has been tight but I'd be able to pay for the input shaft if one becomes available. Right now my Typhoon has been my daily, praying the 700 holds up for a little longer.

Edit:
Yep, there's that hole.
http://home.comcast.net/~k5shawn/shaftcompare.jpg
Looks like I'll need to get my machined for that for that hole since that would be cheaper than buying a newer 4L80.

Re: Important info for buyers

All 96 and prior units have the holes. The long lube tube inside. Take out the two bolts that clamp it in. Pull it and see where that ends up. That tube pumps lube into the rear shaft, up through the main shaft and lubing the gear train. You don't lube that and you'll be walking. The newer units have the little bitty short tube that lubes JUST the bushing for the output shaft and the return line dumps straight into the center support. That's why the newer ones don't need the hole.
