CA owners: title question?

The new Sy I just picked up has the title labeled as a commercial vehicle with the registration being $327 a year!

My title on my other one which is still titled in OR has it labeled as a passenger car and I doubt I ever paid much more than $100 ish every couple of years.

I know CA's fees are higher than OR but is everyone else in CA forced to register as a commercial vehicle?

In Cali all trucks are considered "Commercial Vehicles" and why we pay so much is so we can use those yellow loading and unloading curbs:roll:
California can't understand why anyone would want a truck for a non commercial use:dunno:

CA DMV is an FN joke. I've bought and sold cars maybe 10 this last year, and everytime i go in the fees are going up or they come up with new bullshit. When you buy a car non op, they charge you for the years it was non op to be able to drive it around, i bought a mustang that was non opped since 09 and they tried ramming me with over 300 dollars in charges. Then they say that they can give me a 1 day pass to drive the car to the smog shop and if it fails then they'll give me the number on the window. Then another car I bought last year came up for reg, I had just smogged it last year. They go, well you bought the car in between the 2 year cycles so you got to smog it again this year. WTF, so once again i had to go pay my smog guy a couple hundred bucks to get it smogged since i put on a bunch of "illegal" smog equipment on the car. :rant:

Put a cap on the sy and you can get around the commercial plate but dont get caught hauling stuff

When I bought my ty it was non op for almost 1year, still had plates when put on stand by, then one trip to dmv and $600 later I had registration and plates.

What do you mean cap? I never need to haul anything anyway, that's what the shop truck is for

In ca you can put a shell on the back and take it to DMV for inspection. Then you can register it as a passenger vehicle. They will get you a different plate that has the lettering for a passenger vehicle. If you do that, it would be best to get a personalized Plate so a cop doesn't question you if they notice it.

They used force all trucks in MA to be registered as commercial as well. It was 4x more expensive. Fortunately that went away in the mid 90's.

I wish I did. Wouldn't have any problems letting you borrow it if I did. You can look on cl for one. There probably really cheap for a s-10. I have looked into doing it myself for my Ty but I don't what DMV to question other parts of my registration if I went in.

Well at the DMV right now and I asked about getting it changed to a non commercial and she started grilling me. Apparently if it's non commercial the camper has to on at ALL times or you get a huge fine if caught.

So if I do try like you said I'm definitely gonna have to get custom plates.

The shell thing is correct but I have a commercial personalized plate and don't pay that much by about 1/2. Just looked it up $161. Something fishy. Here's the breakdown:

Registration fee 57
License fee 32
Weight fee (makes it commercial) 24
Special plate fee (personalized plate) 38
County/District fees 10

Get rid of the plate and it's down to 123

Somebody is making a mistake. I suspect that DMV thinks you have a much bigger truck than you have. Get them to explain everything. Use my numbers. Raise hell. That's nuts. That or some outrageous, one time, transfer fee.

yeah i dunno WTF that is all about... go back down to the dmv and ask them what is this commercial vehicle shite??? registration on a syclone shouldn't be any more than $160 tops!! I never paid more than that for mine, and the registration on my typhoon is only $138.

I still say put everyone who works at the DMV on commission and you'll see nothing but assholes and elbows hustlin in there! You'd be in and out in 15 minutes! The attitude of gov't workers in CA is a disgrace. Every time i go in to the DMV it's a 250lber acting pissed off about having to do their job... meanwhile they still get paid for washington and lincoln's bday, MLK day, Columbus day, Cesar Chavez day, and all the other BS gov't holidays that everyone else has to work :rant:
