California smog check - EGR - The story continues

Ok Guys!

I was the proud winner of this years DMV choice to go to a "smog only" test station. The ... (no words would be too impolite) was very happy with my truck, emissions are great "you put a turbo on it" #$#$@" and boom I failed for a "non working EGR". He pumped pressure and wanted to see pressure loss (MOFO!). Last couple of days I had the Laptop strapped on the passenger side and - WONDER - my EGR seemed to work fine, even with my custom chip. So I checked last night, according to the manuals, code 32 checking if the EGR is OK.

So WTF does this guy wants to see.

Truck idle open the EGR by manual moving - rough idle code 32 --> Pass
Apply pressure (~20 hg) start truck and have a slight pressure drop --> Pass
Ground test terminal etc. --> Pass

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO - show up with a Smith & Wesson?

I am anyway past due and I hate the "11" in my front windshield

My condolences. Thanx to this kind of HorseS, I may never register
some of my cars in CA again if possible. Looking at how I can do it in
other states. In fact, I plan to retire out of state if I ever get to do that.

Go back and have someone else test it. Make a call if you have to and talk to someone that manages(if there is one) and let them know your dilemma. Chances are great that if what you say is true, the guy that tested your truck used the equipment WRONG or the equipment was FAULTY. Take your owners manual with you so you can show the manager/supervisor that the truck came with a turbo from GM. If it fails again, take the supervisor out in the parking lot and show him the test your are doing to show that it operates correctly.
Ask them then what their test is looking for. If they are gonna take the time to fail you and screw up your schedule going back, they'd better damn well be ready to take the time to help you "protect the environment" if that is really what they are doing. Good luck. The guys that test my Ty the last time here locally were idiots. Had to make them get on the floor to convince them it was AWD(long story behind that). Then had to show them the manual for the turbo being stock. Problem is that when they punch in the VIN all it shows is GM incomplete. Doesn't say turbo,AWD, Sy,Ty, nothing. You have to educate them but be polite. Our trucks are too rare for you to expect them to know what they are doing with them. BTW, our EGR operates differently from a normally aspirated truck. My brother's GM(same year but fullsize truck), EGR opens a percentage depending on throttle position. Ours only opens when needed(commanded by the ecm). Depending on where the guy is applying pressure or vaccum, if he's on the wrong side of the solenoid, nothing is gonna happen because the soleniod will be closed so the mechanical valve itself isn't getting the signal. Could be your problem. Again, these pricks are probably making minimum wage and hate their job.
Just keep that in mind.

Is anyone tried passing emissions with Vortec heads? At some point I am going to have to register the Ty here in TX although I don't know how thorough their check is.

I will have the ported Vortecs also, and had the same question. I
assume U R in the Houston area, or other "non-compliant" area,
where a Smog tast is required ?

I gather we have no EGR passages on these late Vortecs ? There
was a post within the last few months about how to add an EGR
system to the Vortecs. I'll probably have to face this on 2 cars
sometime in the future.
