Check Engine light.

Sometimes when Ill be crusing my check engine light will just come on for a couple seconds then go back off. I dont know how to check the codes. Do I need a DM? If so I guess its going to wait. The truck doesnt change how it runs at all. It has a 10-1 chip in it, drop in K&N and bigger throttle body. This is my everyday driver, is this something I should worry about. I had Sean Morris check it out when I first got it and we ran it on DM and it looked fine, no knock or anything, and the idle was fine. If someone could give me some sort of help it would be greatly appreciated.

Unless they've changed it since my '88, you should be able to just short two pins on the connector with the ignition off, then turn on the ignition and the check engine light will flash in a sequence to give you the codes.

Mine goes on and off every now and then, its always just a code for Fuel mixture rich.

Which two pins? Do i just run a wire from one pin to the next? Im sorry if these are stupid questions. Actually Im sorry if Im stupid cause I know there are no stupid questions. Where to I find out what the code means once I have it? Thanks again

Off the top of my head I can't remember the pin numbers for my truck, but its probably different from yours (completely different computer/fuel system) I just use a Chiltons manual to read out all the codes, it also has the procedure for shorting the pins. And yes you just stick a piece of wire between the two pins.

People here would probably suggest you get Diacom or Datamaster as it will show all the codes along with a whole heck of alot of other information.

There is a "how to pull codes" on the syty.org website under the problem diagnostics. It also tells you the numbers and what the code is. But, yeah, a scan tool of some sort is best.

Just go to Autozone and say your check Engine light came on. They give you a handy little book, and a nice aluminum key to plug into the ALDL to pull the codes. Book tells you where to put it, how to read the code, what the code means, and what to do to fix it. and it's all free from Autozone.
