Chirping in Reverse

I have a weird thing going on, however it is totally random and I can go days or even weeks without it happening, then out of know where it does it. It is a chirping sound that happens when i'm parked and I go into reverse. I have had it happen going forward too, but its very rare. I can't make out where it is coming from, but would guess under the truck such as the tranny or prop. shaft. Any ideas?

check the U joints for wear. beyond that check the rear axel for excess backlash

my shift bracket passes closest to my propshaft when its in reverse. If you have an aftermarket shaft, check your clearance when its in reverse. It might be grinding/chirping.

stock shaft. I literally put it into reverse and it goes "chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp" off and on that quickely.

You will be able to visually see slop in the u joints (on both end of the exle) themselves if they are bad enough. Their are other ways to check for it, but I would put my truck rear tires on a couple peices of wood (to get ground clearance) and have someone put it in D and R with the engine running and brakes on. Use common sense and becareful when doing this.

If U-joints are going out, it would not chirp. It would have a disting ping sound and it would only happen once which occurs when tension is absorbed between the actual U-joint and the cap (where the bearings are seated) when the vehicle is placed in either forward or reverse. What he is describing sounds internal to the transmission to me and I would guess it is torque convertor related BUT that is an uneducated guess at best. If anyone would know, John Waller would.

...the fact that your "braking" while you move from park to reverse
may imply a vacuum/brake issue.

Do you have the backup beep sensors on???? HAHAH sorry i had to throw that out there. Can you video tape the sound. It might be easier to help. I would recommed to put the truck on a lift and have someone inside the truck changing the gears from forward to reverse and see what you hear. Good luck

sounds like a dry u-joint to me, but more than once i has a s-10 with what sounded like the wear indicators on the pads chirping but turned out to be dry seals on the shafts, they turned almost like plastic and chirped like crazy. just a thought...

Normally a bad u-joint will clunk when load is applied to it, or at least that's what I've expierenced firsthand. If it is making the noise as quickly as I think it is, it may be transmission related.

Well, it is so random and comes and goes. Its been a week now since it has done it. The only thing I can "seemingly" relate it to is the cold. It seems to do it more when it is cold outside, but that could just be coincidence.

now that I have had the time to think a bit more about it I suggest you check your flexplate, starter, TC and TC cover to be sure that one of things is not rubbing on another. sounds more like the flexplate chirping against the starter. might be something in there is loose or getting loose.

I'm also gonna say u-joints, mine did the same exact thing, and only in reverse. Bad u's were my problem.
