Cobra transmission parts

I have had my VIscous coupler fail in the lock up position and broke the front propshaft. So after reading and searching in found people recommending cobra transmission parts for the TC. So I order the rebuild kit and a new vc and put it in and found that the truck would idle and move but the minute I gave a little gas it would slip to the from output. I didn't have the prop shaft in as the truck should move fine without it. So eventually the truck would not move and it would just spin the front output. So I called cobra and they were good and sent me a replacement. Got the replacement and did the swap. I did the test with the TC on the floor and the Vic would turn at about 30ft lbs. Well shit, put it back together and then got the truck back together and went for a drive. Well it moves better and under light throttle drives but the minute you go a little more it just transfer power to the front output again.

Am I missing something here?

Both the replacement Vc came from cobra and I am very curious if anybody else has had these same issues with these parts.

That was the longest sentace I ever read.

Come on, thats not helpful. If you are trying to be smart and pull someone up on their grammer. At least proof read your own reply! Should your response read:-
That was the longest sentance that I have ever read? :)

Anyway, to try and help the OP. I have used Cobra Transmissions for parts and they seemed to be OK. However I haven't have them supply a VC, only a seal, bearing and gasket kit, which seemed to be fine. Was there any Borg Warner branding or other ID on the VC?

Re: Cobra transmission parts

no there wasnt..

Its just baffling because the truck moves at low power but the minute you put a load on it, you just hear the whirling of the front output on the transfercase. and lose movement. Then it will settle back down again.

Re: Cobra transmission parts

Just to give an update since nobody really wanted to chime in. Hopefully this will help somebody out that is new to the community and doesnt get answers like me.

After getting a new front propshaft and putting it in, the truck drove as normal. In the end, after 2 replacement couplers from cobra transmission, I still have a crappy coupler in there that I will need to replace because its acts like an open diff when I load up the drive-train.

Re: Cobra transmission parts

This has me worried as I had planed on ordering this from them in the future, as they are the cheapest I have seen by far. Is there a way to test it before even installing it in the TC? Would save a lot of time.

Re: Cobra transmission parts

I did the test on the second one and it would start to turn at 30 ft lbs which seems very low. But there is very little information out there about what the torque value should be and i have called around and searched.

It seems that the truck will move but the minute you start to get into the power band, it would not hold and just slip. Both couplers came from Taiwan and maybe its a bad batch. But 3-5 hours of your time to do this work just to find out its crap is rather a waste. I will try getting my next one from here http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/bw4472__bw1372.html after I call them to verify where they get them from. If its overseas, I will continue my search.

This is the same thing I am thinking... I may try to find a good used one on the forum.

OP have you called them and told them what your transfer case was doing? What's did they say?

I called the first time and they had no advise. They were just sales people. I haven't called them yet again.

I just got off the phone and they are very concerned about the quality issue and want to make it right. Ill keep this posted on what happens.

Re: Cobra transmission parts

By any chance did you check to see if the chain was stretched? or inspect the Planetary?

Yes I looked at everything. The chain did not have a sag to it and the planetarys I looked at both times. After the first Vc I thought I did something wrong because it was just an immediate transfer of power to front output with no prop shaft.

Re: Cobra transmission parts

I realize this thread is over a year old... But are there any updates? Has anyone else used Cobra in the past year that can provide feedback regarding the VC?

I'm planning to order all new parts for my case this week and want to make sure all is well.

Thx
