crate engine

Re: crate engine

Not sure anyboedy has proven or confirmed the scat crank is stronger. I believe someone actually measured it as softer on the hardness scale. Not saying that is directly tied to strength but at this point I would say the verdict is still out on how strong -vs- stock.

X2, in fact on some other forums there were posting showing the Scat crank as being weaker, then an OEM one

Re: crate engine

well my partner who i own a race car with has some connections to order parts.he ordered a eagle crank, keith black forged pistons, not sure on rods and found a block and is having it machined.i didnt go with a bowtie block or the scat crank, whitch looks to be a good choice.on the crank.thanks for helping in my decision, buying a crate motor would have been a mistake and would not have been strong enough for future mods.he said balancing this motor is a must.

Figure bowtie block of $1500 or more, a "steel" crank $3g. How far do you plan to go. We went from a cheap Jasper motor to full out. Not sure either extreme is what you need/want.

Jeff

I will take a good bowtie block for $1,500 if you come across one. I have one setting on the shelf and turned down $2,500 more than once for it.

Re: crate engine

I was pulling numbers out of my backside as I didn't know the market value for sure. Going from a Jasper motor to bowtie, not sure you can get 2 more extremes though which was my point.

John, you don't need bowtie blocks for the trucks to just sit in the garage BTW.

I beg to differ...I already have over 1,500 miles on tyhe 2WD and the speedo finally is 13k on the AWD! One or the other is out on Friday or Saturday night if not raining (other than winter). They are out probably more than yours...

With both having bowtie motors in them a couple of spare blocks on the self isn't a bad thing... seeing how scarce they have become.

Re: crate engine

guys ,i fell that i have grown and learned much about these trucks in the last few weeks.i am a decent mechanic and played with a few small blocks over the years.i own a race car with a friend who builds engines and does a lot of super charger installations.he ownes a small but respectable speed shop.his thaughts concured with a lot of this forum members thoughts.he told me to let him build this motor and forget about a crate motor that wont last,he also said i can build one put it in and he can take it out and build the right way and pay twice or just let him do it now and be done with it.not over the top, forged pistons and rods, scat crank, balnce it,a little head work, thats all.so i have been fired from my own project.he really should learn to say what he feels and not hold back.fired me and took over my project.hard to believe a 4.3 build would be so much harder than a small block build.really glad i asked for advice here and from my friend.

Re: crate engine

awesome ,i think i will order it,$1,700 it is a direct replacement forged pistons and all.what in these engines other than the heads and forged pistons is different than a stock 4.3.its not worth the time and agrivation rebuilding my current motor for $1,700.will have it next week, they asked if it had press in or screw in studs.i will have to get the valve covers off, anyone have any input on this.

Make sure the Cam is cut for turbo application...I have done alot of research and most of the engines claiming sy ty are not correct...
