curious about boost!

Guys this is all new to me. My Sy has the original turbo as far as I know, what turbo would this be? If I want to run more boost should I look into a boost controler or a larger turbo? Right now I'm thinking I would like to run about twenty psi and I don't know if that is feasable with the stock turbo what do ya'll think? Should I contact Garrett for a larger turbo if I go that route?

Stock turbo is a Mitsubishi TD06-17C. Its a decent turbo, good on the low to mid range power on the stock setup. There are plenty of trucks in the mid to high 12s on stockers, with a handful pushing the envelope just a bit more, but not by much.

You can run more boost on the stock turbo. Id would very much recommend that you install a Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator (AFPR) and a bigger fuel pump such as the Walbro 255 which is the popular brand. The fueling on our trucks is very minimal in stock form, so if your wanting to run more boost, you need to address fueling.

20psi on the stock turbo is possible, however at that psi the turbo is out of its range of efficiency and its very bad at controlling and keeping it a solid 20psi. This is were you need to start looking into an electronic boost controller and possibly upgrading your wastegate to an external instead of the stock integral. Can you run 20psi? Sure. Again, make sure you have adequate fueling, good ignition, and a good way to keep that boost under control. Most guys will run around 18psi on the stockers.

Heres a pic of the turbo map for the TD06-17C

We have vendors on here who deal in turbo sales and can help you determine whats best for you if you decide to upgrade. Typically, the 20g turbo (the next size up from stock) is a common mod that has spectacular results when tuned right. Visit the vendor section and check some of those guys out.

I plan on running 18psi. You will also need a 3 bar chip and map. I already have the fuel thing set up. any more than 18psi you might need larger injectors too. I will be using a alky injection because of the 91oct gas in california. 20g Turbo I hope will come next year. I have to get my car running good before I think about running more then 15psi.

Re: curious about boost!

Thanks alot guys, mid to high twelves is exactly what i'm looking for. Before I do any of this I am getting a new fuel filter and I am having my injectors cleaned. The fuel pump is next. We have 93 octane in Houston is this good enough for 18-20psi? Who makes a good boost controler for these Sy's?

I have run a stock turbo to 27psi. Turbo could care less. It does take a lot of tuning, and external tweaking to make happen correctly though.

For most 20psi is about the limit of stock turbo, after that bigger turbo is something to think about assuming you got the scan tool, and safety mods done.

Do you have Datamaster, or some kind of scantool where you can monitor knock count and KR? (knock retard) As you seek to squeeze more performance out of your truck, it is strongly recommended you get somekind of monitoring device to see how your truck performs. For me, I ran 93 and would draw about 9deg. KR all the time; summer, fall, spring, it didn't matter. MANY have chased knock issues for years with little to no success. Some people can run 93 with no knock, some can run 93 and have all kinds of knock.

As for the boost controller......

If using an ultimate chip, the chip has the boost controlled by the stock ECM. The chip has different program so you can adjust the boost lower and higher.

Re: curious about boost!

Guys thanks again for your input. Can ya'll tell me more about this Ultimate chip? How do you set the boost on a chip? Where to buy, and how much to pay? About this scan tool, I don't have one yet. I am completely new to this scan tool thing and was wandering if a beginer could figure it out? Thanks again.

Re: curious about boost!

sorry to whore your post. im sure my question will help you out to.

when upgradeing to a 3bar map. will the stock ecu be able to give the fuel needed? is there anything else that needs to be done to run a 3 bar?
im running 40# inje. 225 pump and afpr. i forgot what the numbers were, but what does everybody set the afpr to?

Whoahhhh!!!!

I am a newbie here but I thought that the ECU cuts out the boost to prevent damage to the engine? I am having a wastegate/overboost problem so am interested in tyhe idea of increasing the boost.

My vehicle is a stock 1992 Ty.

Am I totally wrong?

Re: curious about boost!

The stock ECM basically cut the boost when it pegs the 2 bar map sensor for a period of time. In your case it sound like you have no WOT boost control...you want to fix that problem first before you up the boost.

Re: curious about boost!

to run the 3bar you need a chip calibrated to a three bar map sensor. yes the ecu will cut boost to keep from blowing the engine mostly because the limit of the factory chip is 2bar (14.7 psi) after that no matter how much boost you have all the ecu sees and can fuel for is the 14.7. the three bar chips have fuel maps for the higher boost levels. and how are you running the 40lb inj? do you have a chip for it? fuel pressure is usually determined by the chip programmer. i believe the ulitmates say start at 50lbs of base fuel pressure.

Re: curious about boost!

I ran 19psi on my stock turbo and 93 octane. I generally had 5degrees of knock right b4 shifts. I am still not sure if it was false knock or not. My engine has always had knock, no matter how I tune it. Brand new out of the box even.

i replaced the injectors because one was bad. and i could not pass up the deal on these 40#'s. so i just put them on. i figured the computer would limit the fuel so i would be o.k. with them. truck runs goos with them. cant remeber what my FP is at idle. seein last time it was out was a few months ago
