Diagnosing A/C problems?

The Ty runs great, a/c works fine, but I hate noisy accessories. My compressor chatters pretty good at idle (no squealing, just chattery). Could it possible just need a new clutch? The a/c works and I would like to not have to crack open the system if just changing the clutch would make the noise go away.

Re: Diagnosing A/C problems?

Usually the chatter comes from the air gap being off. You can check and adjust it, or you can replace the clutch assy without opening up the system. Might as well fix it sooner vs later, otherwise you face the possibility of damaging the compressor later. If you see metal shavings around the clutch or sparks inside while the engine is running, its not a good sign.

Thanks, I also noticed that it only chatters when not engaged.
