driveability on big turbo

Well im tryin to decide if I should get a 66+ series turbo or stay on the porch and get a 54 or something in that range. Im kinda hoping for a 11sec slip when my build is done but id also like to go out on weekends with it. I have a 2800 stall but its not a 9/11. What would you guys do? Thanks for any help.

I went w a PTE-63 and I understand that that should get into the 11's. I have a 3200 Stall 9/11.

The 54 is just the next size under the 63, and I have one on my GN. It's wheel measurements R the same as a TE-62. So, unless U R going all out track, I would stay w the 54.

i am in the same boat. i am looking for a mid 11 second pass out of my ty and will be driven everyday. mike lee reccomended that i go with a 66. he said you can still maintain driveability and make power as well.

Another question would be - what else have U done ? There's no sense putting on that large a Turbo if U haven't upped the air (or gas) handling capacity of the whole system. So that the rest of the passages can handle the increased flow that the Turbo can deliver.

U will need to increase the capacity of the inlet Air tract, Heads, Downpipe, and Exhaust system. Possibly also the Inlet Manifold and Headers. Then U will need to beef up the Trans and increase the Fuel delivery capabilities - Fuel Pump, Regulator and injectors.

Now U need to control the beast. U will probably need to Mod the ECM and Chip (Ultimate) or go Felpro or Accel Gen 7. And then U will probably need to go thru a few rounds of Chip experimentation if U stay w the Modded ECM.

And I personally wouldn't do any of this stuff w/o improving the Handling and Braking capabilities.

i like big turbos..... but you need a turbo and converter to match your engine build. so your question should actually be..........

"hey guys this is my build, what turbo and converter do you think i should get?"

Ok, lettame clarify. New engine(zero bore)4bolt,eagles,srp,crank has all the trimmings,stage2 vortecs..I will convert to a/a when i get the $ but just the jab pump fer now. HP fuel pumper. As far as the trans it has the $400 ..cough,cough..i mean the 2000 dollar DIY trans kit and a raptor2800 convert. This build is in progress and im trying to decide on the turbo. Any suggestions?

The bigger Turbos R also harder to fit in. I'm installing my PTE-63 and here's what I've found so far :

1.)It runs into the battery and fender, so I have to clock it some. Also ran into the heater hose that goes to the radiator, so I had to remove it and will have to repipe that.

2.) It is definitely taller, so I will have to make my own Turbo/IC hose. I think I found a Gates radiator hose that should work. Hopefully it doesn't melt.

3.) Not sure what I'll do for the Air inlet - one more Mod to do.

4.) The turbo pushes the 3" PTE DP over almost into the AC reservoir - guess I'll have to insulate there.

5.) It's going to be difficult to get to the wg adjusting rod.

6.) I put in a fitting that PTE carries that lets me use a 10 AN hose for the Turbo Oil return, and it runs into one of the clocking bolts.

Essentially none of the mods I'm putting in bolt up nice and things R going agonizingly slow.

what exhaust and downpipe will you be running. that is another main component as well as the motor build. i dont think that headers are that needed, look at the canadians, 10.70s on stock exhaust manifolds, just port them and you could save yourself a thousand dollar to put somewhere else.

I will be sporting the manifolds for now and I am hoping the DP comes with the turbo. As far as the fitment issue, I know its gonna take some hackin and slappin but im guessng the smile/slip will be worth it. I have also been hearing different arguments about buildin boost at the line. Did E ever figure it out>?

Yeh, U may be right on that, probably not necessary unless U R going pretty far. Plus the ATR Headers create so many interferences and changes that I kinda regret going that way.

ET 11,5 with a 67 p trim 0,81 , 22 psi 21* advance 100 oct.with a very old engine that gave 115 to 140 psi on a compression test
The 67 spooled better than i would ever expect with the 911

actually guys, there isnt really anything to cut up. even if your using the big compressor housing with the 3" outlet it will fit fine, as long as you dont have AC. if you do have AC you need to do some modifying. all the PTE turbos are bolt on for the most part. the only tricky thing is adapting it to work with whatever intercooler you are using. click on my sig and take a gander at the pics. the older pics are of the KB intercooler with a PT52. the newer pics are of a mccoy intercooler and a PT74. my syclone should stay in this configuration. a 74mm turbo is plenty big. lol

and as far as this header debate that is going on......
the headers are really nice if your going fast. do you need them to run 10's? not really but it makes it easier. tony is running a crappy KB intercooler core too. he may be running 10's with this combo, but i bet he could do it on less boost, if he had a better intercooler and headers.
so you regret buying the headers? how come? they havent caused me any problems at all, actually..... i like changing the plugs on those better than the stockers. i have 2 trucks. one with stock exhaust and one with the ATR headers. wanna take a guess which one i like better? the only arguement i can see against the headers is the cost. but thats always been an issue.

So E how much boost can u build at the line? Is the spool all that bad as far as daily driving? If you had to do it over again would you go with the 74? Im just curious on your setup cause it sounds like ill have the same config somewhat.

If your truck is set up properly, you shouldn't need such a large turbo. You should be able to get into the 11's with a TE-44 and a 2800 stall and stock injectors using the Ultimate chip version 6.

i cant build any. i still have the 2800 9/11 in my truck from the old turbo. ask me again in a few weeks. im planning on getting mine re-stalled to 3500. spoolup is a little slower, but you have to expect to trade some bottom end for so much top end. i still think a 72 may be a better choice for street duty, but i like the 74 a lot. its nothing like i though it was gonna be. its not hard to spool at all. anything over ~3200rpm will get you into positive boost pretty easy. like i said before tho, its all about matching your motor build........ and you still havnt answered........ what cam are you gonna use?

I am still tryin to decide which cam to get. My goal is to find the best setup w/o headers, speedpro and a/a (for now) and hit 11's without going over 17psi. Im thinkin a 512 if I go the 72 route. Maybe a little bigger if I am going to get a higher stall convert. I think I might scrap the 2800raptor and get a 3000+ 9/11. Its too bad cause it has less then 10 miles on it :x

I have a full T4 T66 Turbo on my truck and I have of course done a lot of work to make it fit but.. right now I just have a stock tranny and a stock torque converter in the truck and it drives great.. when I get the 3000 stall in there it will be awesome.. right now boost is almost instant... hardly any lag. I have a 0.82 turbine housing on it.

I have a custom grind cam.

It on the stock converter I can brake boost it to 5-7 psi with no problem.
