Exhaust Manifolds

Just started putting on the new manifolds on the sy. Drivers side went on easy enough, but the I was having alot of problems with the passengers side... So I compared it to the old heads I took off. The back cylinder hook up is about an 1/8-1/4 inch off! It seems as though this new manifold and the old one both were warped in some way? Has any one else ran into this problem? These are new manifolds-I'm thinking I'm gonna have to have them cut, then bolted on the old head and re-weld it?

Re: Exhaust Manifolds

Don't really know what a back cylinder hook up is, but I am guessing it means bolt holes? Which way is the manifold off? Is the manifold too narrow or too wide? If the manifold is to narrow, there is a tool called a manifold spreader that can be used to align the bolt holes. If the manifold is to wide, clamps can possibly be used to close the manifold. I do not recommend reaming out the bolt holes on the manifold, the exhaust ports will be way off. If the manifold is just warped, meaning not flat, just take it to a machine shop and have it plane flat.

Re: Exhaust Manifolds

This is a common problem, the exhaust manifold has shrunk. You can use a set of manifold expanders as suggested above. I recommend not leave the exhaust manifold sitting around. I always bolt mine to a set of heads if they are going to be off for any length of time. I see a lot of people with manifold sitting around in box for years and having these problems.

Re: Exhaust Manifolds

ask your wife if you can stick that manifold in the oven for about 3 hours on 300. I'm not sure how much it will expand it, but I used to do that with Audi 5 cylinder exhaust manifolds all the time... they were a pita!

Re: Exhaust Manifolds

Ya, I think this message ends up in epic description thread. Right next to the one asking about left handed hammers and muffler bearing- Ya by hook up I meant bolt holes. The manifold is too small/compressed, so that expander will do the trick, and no need to cut and re-weld. That is reassuring!! Thanks guys
