been having that dreaded purple wire issue. the one where you go to start vehicle and nothing happens. keep turning key and eventualy it starts. been this way since i bought the '92 typhoon back in april of '08.

changed out my starter cable since it rubbed through against the downpipe, but never shorted out cause the dp is wrapped. and since i was down there i figured i'd take care of the purple wire cause that was all corroded, too. followed it as far back as i could reach. which was somewhere between the dizzy and firewall. went with same gauge and new connectors.

been werking fine with no problems and starts up on cue. untill today. drove it to the mall this morning>parked>got out to go inside and came back to the truck and it did the same no start. after a few turns...it starts.

i thought replacing the corroded section of the wire would fix this problem. do i need to go further back or is it just time to get the 454 mini starter?

If I were you I would go to Auto Zone and get the Duralast Gold mini starter with the lifetime warranty. Chances are you are operating with the original starter which is prolly on its last leg anyway, if not already dead. The factory starter is a PITA to get out, but the mini goes back in quite easy. BTW with a good battery it will nearly turn the truck over!!! Anyway good luck.

put a relay on the purple wire and give it a good power source and the problem will disappear.

replacing the purple wire with just another wire only fixes that short section that was corroded.
it did not solve the voltage drop that occurs along the circuit that drives the starter solenoid (purple wire).

Search for hot shot relay.
Its a common fix and I have not heard of anyone having click no starts with a new starter and a hot shot relay.

sorry, i didn't realize there was soo many posts on this topic. i read into it and i will be giving the relay a try. just gotta figure out the wiring diagram.

For that matter, the old starter + hot shot relay often does the trick, too. I had the purple wire problem about 8 years ago. I added the relay and it still uses the same starter today.

The starter comes out easy when you remove the TC bottom cover.

hey josh, do you happen to know the part#/price of the mini starter you mentioned?

I just called Auto Zone, the part numbers for the starters are 9990. Guy said they all had the same parts number. They offer the following:

1.) reman. Duralast Gold with a 1 year warranty for $119.95 + $35 core.
2.) reman Duralast Gold with a lifetime warranty for $129.99 + core.
3.) brand new Duralast Gold with lifetime warranty for 149.99. + Tax and of course no core charge.

I would suggest the new one with the lifetime warranty, as it is only a few $$$ more.

Just be sure when you go get one that you have them look it up for the following:

1996 Chevrolet, 3/4 ton, 4X4 truck, with the 454 engine.
