Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

My Ty is lowered and I've been noticing that the truck does not like to be turned sharply, as in turning around in a tight place. The front end seems to "hop" or "skip" when turning. Only other way I can describe it, is it feels like there is a spool in the front end dif not allowing the tires to rotate at different speeds. Anyway I haven't dug into it yet, just looking to see if anyone here had a similar issue, and what they did to resolve it.
Thanks.

My Ty does it on full lock. It feels like the front diff is locked.:dunno:

I've read on syty.net that the syty's act that way when your transfercase needs to be rebuilt. The the thread I read said that the viscous coupling is locked up and needs to be replaced. Do a search for viscous coupling and hopefully you'll find the thread that I'm talking about.

I think all 4x4, AWD anything hop a little. My truck does it, but if you take the propshaft out. RWD gets all the power so not sure how locked it is???

Also have a 04 ford ranger, and in 4x4 it does the same thing.

Re: Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

Some resistance to turning is normal, but if the hopping is bad, it indicates a locked viscous clutch in the transfer case. The "hopping" is essentially one tire breaking traction to unbind the drivetrain.

the clutch in the trnasfer is suppose to prevent this, if you take the front propshaft out you can burn up the transfercase

My Ty came in from japan with no front prop on so if it had been run over there in 2wd would that damage the viscous coupling.

viscous coupling no, transfer case yes.

ok to the garage and back, but if you run it with no prop shaft then it will most likley be damaged.

Hi mate i think the transfer case is good as it makes no noises like a slipping chain or missing teeth and it drives smooth. The only problem is the feeling the front diff is locked when on full lock. The only time i had this befor was on an old range rover when a gear in the center diff broke and locked it. So im thinking its the viscous and maybe thats why the front prop was removed in japan. I might just wait till something goes bang.

all 4/AWD vehicles act like this, My Clone does it, my friends 4X4 truck does it, my dads does it.

When your getting to full turn, the CV joints are causeing the lock up.

Re: Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

I dont have 4WD anymore and my car does this at full lock. :/, especially backing out

Although recently I swear I've heard clunking/banging from the rear end upon acceleration, so maybe my rear locker is stuck/rear is going bad?

Although my balljoints look like they took like a shotgun blast to the face, that might be it.

Have you had your alignment checked since the truck was lowered.what was the caster set at.excessive caster can cause this along with a few other things.this may be something as simple as redoing the alignment.

Re: Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

If you have the stock G80 'limited slip' differential, go get a bottle of the GM additive. I just went through this exact thing with my DD. Especially on backing. It worked! I know, the additive isn't specified for our diffs. But it worked for me.
sorry for sounding retarded but I've never touched my diff, one of the few things I haven't worked on, on my car. Where do I get the additive and how do I put it in?

and I'm running about -1* camber and like 5* caster so its a fairly extreme setup for the street.

Does this help with wandering? I feel like when I get on the gas sometimes it wants to pull one direction, then when I left it off it wants to go in the other, is this part of the diff being retarded?

I also get a nice creak from the rear going from stops, but I think it's just my brakes

Re: Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

The 5* of caster can do this.high caster increases toe out on turn.which can cause the front end to feel like it is shifting or hopping during tight turns.5 degrees caster makes cars feel more stable while driving, has better steering return coming out of turns, and reduces road walk.the down side to extreme caster is toe out on turn, and a few other things but not really noticeable in street cars.
I set my alignment fairly close to yours along with changing tire size to help reduce road walk.but i made the front end shifting feeling worse due to the catser.i olny notice it when i am on course pavement though.

Re: Front end "hopping" on tight turns?

Yeah for the past year or two I have been at war with my car trying to figure out how to get it to drive straighter. The alignment is amazing at autocrosses, the car was completely neutral last time I drove it, and that's with some serious flaws in the suspension like belltech shocks in the rear that don't dampen worth a damn.

It feels great after replacing balljoints, for about a week or two, and when I re-grease them it starts to feel pretty good for a short period of time.

Someone REALLY needs to make arms again that fix our balljoint angle issues, I think that would solve so many of our problems. If I had access to the tools I would in a heartbeat
WTF is RPM thinking selling $1000 sets of arms that are not accounting for the horrible balljoint angle?

Soon I'm going to swap in the P&P balljoints, and hopefully that will fix some of my issues, like your problems, on bumpy pavement my car is all over the place, and there's even a place on a highway around here that if I hit a certain bump it violently pulls my car to the right and if you're not paying very close attention you will probably end up getting to know a guardrail or wall.
