Front hub question, with pic

I removed my front hub/bearing, and noticed a bunch of grease outside the bearing and caked over the inside of the spindle where the bearing seats. Is this normal or should I think about new hubs? The truck drove fine, but I thought since the bearings were sealed so there should be no grease outside the bearing? I hate to ask this, but I've not had a wheel bearing go bad in the past 8 years I've owned these trucks.

It's weird, what looks like rust in the pic is actually dried grease coated in a layer of rust. I'm wondering if the previous owner threw some extra grease on there when the bearing was installed, there's just so much of it. I was hoping to re-use these so I'll give them another chance. Thanks for the input.

I just re did my hubs in conjunction with my LS 1 brake upgrade and mine looked exactly like that. Mine were still good but I went ahead and replaced them anyway since I had everything apart.

Normally, I'd replace them too. But I've spent a little too much on this lately and was hoping to skimp some. Sounds like mine are fairly normal.

I would advice u too change the seals, just in case, the seals doesnt cost anything and the old seals tend to get hard and brittle during the years.

Good idea, my seals are shot. I've found GM part number 560680 for the spindle seal, but can't find anything aftermarket. Anyone got a part number?

I think my seals were from Federal Mogul, but cant remmeber the part number, but they are about 10$ a piece or sumthing

So, did you guys that had your hubs out put new grease on them before you put them back on? I used high temp. blue grease and a finger and smeared some on the hub. I didn't put alot on, just enough to contact the surfaces. Made sure there was not too much so it spun fairly easily. Just making sure...Jim

I would replace those. My hubs looked nothing like that and i swung the 94 American dollars shipped to my door. It was off ebay but they were Timken bearings and i am very happy with them. I had 80k on the odo and had some in and out play. cheap insurance.
