Front wheels not spinning correctly?

So PPITyphoon, thajoker, and myself went to get dyno'd today. PPI went first and spun all four tires the same (92 typhoon). Then thajoker went and spun all four tires (91 syclone). I get on the ramp and they tell me something is wrong with my viscous gear because my back wheels are spinning more than my front ones. I've never heard of this so I ask the guys what to do and they say don't run it. So I spent all day for nothing :x . I go home and look at the video and sure enough, my back wheels seem to be spinning more than twice as fast as my front.
Here is where it gets wierd.
So I try to do some research and come up with that in 93 they switched Transfer cases. Some guy was trying to tell me that if mine was the newer version that my truck was actually performing properly, something about it matching torque or something, really confusing stuff. He wanted me to look under my typhoon and tell him what was the name on the bottom of my transfer case. On the true all wheel drive dyno, my front wheels spun, just not nearly as fast as the back ones. Can someone enlighten me on either what this guy is talking about or what might be the problem I am having.

sounds like a bunch of :bs: to me. If you look on the transfercase, there should be a little aluminum tag on one of the front case bolts. Somewhere on that tag should be the numbers 4472. That would denote that it is a borg-warner 4472 transfercase, same as every other SyTy out there. 35% of the power goes to the front, 65% to the rear.

Where did you find this information about the transfercases?

One of the local GN guys was sayin that the transfercase would either say bog warner or something like new edition.

Im sure he meant "new venture" and since when do GN guys know jack shit about SyTys??

Ignore anything he has said and start looking into what the problem is if you feel there is one.

isn''t there somthing in tha manual that says, that if your viscious coupling is broking, you are still alowed to drive it annyway?
i thought i read that it the chilton repair book

Maybe your rear gear doesnt match the front gear and they spin at a different rate ?

very very very very very unlikely, things would be all screwed up then and I would have to assume he would notice.

go look for that tag on the transfercase.

here is a picture of the T-case when i pulled it out of the Duck.

you can see the tag on the middle bolt on the bottom, its in the same location on my truck.

I would sooner believe your viscous coupler is toast before I would believe you have a different transfercase or front axle ratio.

Also, just incase this gets brought up later, technically, all 4 wheels arent supposed to spin at the same rate under power. Of course on a dyno, both front wheels are on the same roller, but in real life or if you life the truck off the ground, 3 out of 4 wheels will spin the same since the front is an open differential, not limited slip or posi.

Its a bog warner. I keep looking at the tape and seeing the consistancy with the percentage of spin with the front wheels compaired to the back ones. I am beginning to wonder if there even is a problem. If it is a problem, could somebody explain to me what needs to be done so I can act like I know what I am talking about and don't get screwed at a tranny shop. Thanks guys

Am I wrong in saying that the front wheels should only spin about half as fast because of our distributions in the transfer case, 35% to the front and 65% to the rear?

The 65/35 split is the same on both of your guys TYs , so shouldnt you both have the same wheel spin front and rear , saying that all parts are the same ?? In 93 the options of what they could have put in your rear end gear wise may be the difference in between your 93 ty , PPI's 92 ty and the 91 Sy . I looked up the stock options and found that 3.08,3.23's, 3.42's, 3.73's, and 4.11's were available from the factory . At least thats what I found searching here .Not sure the validity of that info but Im just trying to help .

I would think you would have some audible noise if your viscous coupler was bad .

i wish someone with a little more experience would chime in on this thread.

if it were me (and im not telling you to go do this) I would remove the rear driveshaft and just keep the front in and see if the truck actually moved on its own. Ive read stories of people driving home from the track with FWD, so it can be done, but I wouldnt do it for long, just enough to see if the t-case is still active.

if it does, i say your truck is fine, but again, im no expert. :dunno:

I'm sure there is a diagnostic procedure for this.

check the typhoon supplement.

you could always take the truck to a drivetrain shop. Here in MI, we have DTS (Drivetrain specialists) [ http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/ ]

you could always email them.

Let us know how it goes. Im sure some of us have this problem and don't even know it.

Not if you explode them like I do every time I break a viscious couping :rock: I breake things the right way :D

Hold up.... Morgan if he takes out the drive shaft, isnt a lot of tany fluid going to come out. Doesnt sound to safe to me, but i could be wrong???

What symptom? The OP talked about the fronts being slower than the rears. No prop shaft = fronts not spinning at all. Not sure what you mean.

I think I got my threads mixed up, I mean the viscous causing jumping at low speed.
