gotta love the 4.3!!!

starting to build/gather parts for my new motor, and i'm gaining more and more respect for the 4.3 every day!

Block/crank. Free "just get it out of my garage!" although i think the crank is scrap, hell it was still free and the block is in excelent shape!

ARP head studs: 50 bucks. used for several hundred miles, no race time, some abuse on motor, oil issue destroyed motor, screwed up 2 studs taking motor appart! works for me!

1.6 roller rockers: another 50 bucks! spring broke, valve fell and hit piston, claiming rocker with it. only 15 to the set, several passes and a few street miles, still brand new!

splayed 4 bolt main caps, billet steel!!: 75 bucks at swap meet, and i'll have an extra!

and damn it i could have a free set of Scat forged H-beam rods if they would fit! same accident as the head studs claimed 1 rod, has 7 left :rant: that woulda been a sweet deal!

:tup: guess there is a place in the SyTy world for a low budget racer!

Better hope you use good bearings and put it together correctly. :lol:

if your buying 8 rods I can only assume they came from a sbc and they wont fit a 4.3

Got a set of stainless 1.60 exhausts for 20 bucks and some 98 heads at a U-pull-it for a good price as well.

Motors coming along alot better than I though already! now if it would just clear up here so i could take the truck out and not sit here and be bored out of my skull...

I'll put it together right fo' sure! after looking through a hand full of cranks, seems maybe an oiling problem exists W/ getting oil to the front main bearings, so i'm gonna have the bearings coated for some extra insurance. :tup:

nice, very nice i would come back that my motor cost less than yours but i think you might have me beat since i bought bolts/studs new. i might catch you when you get to the machine work though.

good luck and i hope more people will read this and do what you are doing. common misconception: sytys are expensive. do research and build it yourself folks! i will warn you though people will come out of the woodwork and tell you that you need to be careful because you don't know how to build a syty engine. these are the people who have been duped into believing this and spent a year or more of their savings on a custom motor and stupid mods that don't do shit.

well you probably will be cheaper than I, i'm going with Eagle H beams and JE forged pistons, i kinda splurged since i'm going to push some healthy pressure into it. If i didn't want something specificaly to be stupid fast, i'd do a cryo'd crank and L35 rods W/ arp bolts and 8.5:1 hypereutecnic pistons and vortech heads w/ pte 54 for a very depenedable mid/low 11 second truck. FWIW stock parts are very strong. ESPECIALLY in a turbo app. grab the books from my sig (the're there for a reason) read up, and prep the parts correctly and there's nothing wrong with them except they are alot cheaper and sponsors arn't making any money off of them. :2cents:

It's 3/4 of a 350. there's no black magic about it. you don't need to spend 30k to have a 10/high 9 second truck [you do however SERIOUSLY need your fuggin head examined 30k for a 10 second S-10, i got a bridge you need to add to that mod list as well...](I should be very low 10's for under 6 grand including trans/driveshafts) Books are your best friend, Patience a very close second, and swap meets are a hardy 3rd as well as message board "fo' sale" sections. talk to the locals, there's nothing wrong with the local machine shops, ask around for who's reputable.

agreed except i do have eagle h-beams and JEs. my point (and yours) is that if you research, do everything yourself, budget minded, not in a huge hurry then yes you can be fast.

kind of off topic:
my co-workers are pissed off at me because i am "hacking up" a syclone. my point of view is so what if it's rare? it was cheap. i weighed the difference in buying a sy or sti and building both. in the end the sy was about 1/3 of the price and faster. i built a 68 chevelle as well and that also pissed off a few of my friends until i said... ok so i should have spent 3X more on a brand new GTO (example) and then spent twice as much on shittier unrefined aftermarket parts? i am rambling now so i'll shut up.

They can be made to fit you just have to machine the crank end thinner, thats all oliver does when you order rods

SBC journal 2.10"
4.3 Journal 2.25"

Gotta have the crank ground .150, *and* check the thrust clearances on the sides.
It would almost be cheaper to buy the new rods vs. all that machining. Unless you can do it yourself...

.150 is a lot to take off a crank that doesn't have a common crankpin, IMO.

thats cool i love to see someone throw together a junkyard motor and just crush some cocky chap with a $20k motor. when its all over said and done after you smoke them, you can just look at them and confidently say; "by my calculations, you spent about 19k dollars to much on that motor". :rotf:
