OK, Front end is all back together, will be changing the transfer case Tues. Not done one before. Anything special? Can I do it by myself? Looks pretty straight forward in the manual which can be a warning sign, :lol: That being said I may pay to have it done anyway as I don't, at this time, have use of my garage which means I am literally in the street. Driveway is sloped so not a good plan to work there. Will be calling my trans guy Mon for his estimate.

Worse thing about doing it alone is htat when you get it off the trans output shaft, i can come down quick. I get under it like I am about to bench press and keep constant tension on it. Then put it on my chest and slide her off. Otherwise, youre looking at about a 30 - 50 minute removal depending on your experience, piece of cake really.

I would look for George Blake's tranny R&R guide for tips (you'll only need part of the guide obviously). I think it's in the forums here as well as reprinted on www.sytyarchives.com.
Drain the transfer case before you pull it. Otherwise you will really get doused in ATF when it comes down!! (Drape something over yourself anyways because you will still get dumped with ATF even after you drain it, just not as much.) That shit doesn't come out in the wash.
You'll probably need a new transfer case gasket too - order one ahead of time from the GM dealer. It is very heavy so be ready for it when it comes down!! Get a cardboard box or tray (like the bottom of a 24 pack of soda cans) next to you with newspaper, so you can gently set the transfer case into it as soon as it comes down.

Great tips guys. I had actually considered putting the rear higher, so I guess I'm not nuts. I've had the X-member out once before so will prolly just pull it for the room since I'll be by myself. Since I have another case it will just be a swap, and I already know what it weighs so will be ready. Roger on the gasket, and on all the oil protection ideas. I really don't want to leave any stains in my street. Things are clean under the truck which helps as well so hopefully the R&R will go well.
Any thoughts on fill oil? Or just ATF (if I remember right.)

OK it's out. original case has a sticker that says "HP", can't read the rest. New case has a sticker "DZ". Meaning?
Other than that I'm off to look for a gasket. Had enough for one day anyway. Wife works for an accounting firm and their "tax" party is tonight. Gota rest up for that.:tup:

If you're talking about a gasket that goes where the transfercase and the transmission mate I think a lot of people use silicone. but the I'm not sure if I would, the factory gasket can't be that much. As for the "HP" and the "DZ" here at work it shows there were two Transfercases offered for our trucks so maybe you are installing the other kind? I think the differences are that the Borg warner T-case has what seems to be a timing belt stylle belt in stead of a chain, and the chain style has much more parts inside...??? I don't know if I'm causing more confusion then help. But that's what Alldata tells me.... :roll:

OK transfer case is in. Now I really do think the right half-shaft is toast. :rant: At higher speed, 80 seems to work, it sounds like a 50cal machine gun in the cab. I mean it's LOUD. Best as I can tell it's road speed related. I will get an occasional pop at lesser speed, actually heard it first on the 1-2 shift at the strip Wed. Anyway, will look at it tomorrow. Ain't goin' anywhere until I find this racket. Geez.

Will do. But don't fret about it, I'm not. Before I changed the T case I had the front end off the ground and there was no evidence of failed half-shafts. No slop, no torn boots, no grease. My neighbor, who has a tire & brake shop looked at them also and came to the same conclusion.
My truck has always sort-of had this hurky-jerky motion when backing up with the wheels turned hard either way. I've been told, and seen here, that that was a T case problem. It doesn't do that any more. So I fixed that if nothing else. :tup:
