hard shift 1-2

Recently purchased 93 Ty with 74k. Problem: Hard shifts from 1-2 at partial load. Ok under heavy throttle and light load. Anywhere in between...BAM! Transmission fluid level ok and not burnt. Shift kit does come to mind but this Ty was owned by an 80 year old woman. First and only owner. Seems unlikely but not impossible.
Related, at full throttle, trans shifts around 4000 rpm, never above. Is there an adjustment for the transmission throttle valve cable. If there is, what is the procedure?

search own you. but if you not willing to search 1-2 harsh shift is normal and good, the sign of a healthy transmission.

You sir, own a Ty with a 100% correct and healthy trans. Consider yourself blessed. Some customers actually returned their trucks to the dealer with the complaint of a firm 1-2 shift. If it's too firm for you, send it to me and I'll send you one from an Astro van....

My Ty shifts like that as well. I actually got a kick out of it. Makes me feel like the truck just wants to move. There is a sweet spot in throttle position (on the super light side) that makes the shift smooth into second gear.

Thats the one thing I love about my truck when I'm just getting on it. It will kick you hard, and I know you can see the truck move hard while in traffic. I love it.

If there were a shift kit in your truck it would most likley shift softer than a stock sy/ty trans. it seems like a healthy 1-2 shft to me! i wish my truck still slammed into gear.:(

Re: hard shift 1-2

hard 1-2 shift is normal for a stock tran. try pulling the tv cable several times and see if that changes the shift points. wishful thinking. if everything else is working just may be a bad governor. not too hard to replace. on drivers side of tran on the side in the rear. see if you can borrow one to try before you buy one.

Re: hard shift 1-2

Be careful adjusting the TV cable. It's **NOT** a simple "Kickdown cable" like on the old TH350/TH400 trannys. There is really no "adjustment". There is ONE position it should be in (Jimmy gave a link to the proper procedure). People with 700-R4s have SMOKED their trans trying to use the TV cable to adjust shift points. I agree with Les's advice, see if you can try a stock SyTy governor (the R&R is a pain in the @$$ but not impossibly hard) and get those shifts to 4300-4500 RPM. I'll buy your old governor off you for $20 if you end up getting rid of it (mine shifts too high).

Re: hard shift 1-2

hey tooky... you know you can change the governor shift points by adjusting it. you can either raise or lower the points by either adding or removing weight on the end of the governor. can put a little weld on the end to add weight or remove a little with a dremel. can fine tune em this way to shift where ever you want them. i do have a spare governor if someone needs it but i'm not sure what shift it is. anyone know the code numbers or color coding or what? i used to know but as everyone knows i'm gettin on in age and gettin a little forgetful. used to know how to go fast and everything. lately... i can't even figure out how to adjust a carburator.

if you want to try this one tooky let me know and if you pay the postage i'll let you try it. probably be better to work with your's though. fine tune your own. worked for me.

how ya been. pm sometime
