Help--Very hard shifting to 2nd???

I know this is the way they probably came from the factory, but has anyone done anything to get a smoother shift without losing performance??

The shift can be softened just like grannys 6cyl valiant but the trans life will be measured in weeks (unless you drive like granny which would make me wonder why you have a syty).

Firm shifts=the trans living a while.
Soft shifts=the trans not living very long at all.

Ok-I see your point I guess. I just wanted to make sure that they were made like that from the factory and that is the way it should be.

Yes borderline uncomfortable 1-2 upshift is normal and is actually somewhat of a good sign your trans is healthy.

Ditto. When I took my truck for the test drive back in 1999, the *harsh* 1-2 shift was unnerving. Made me think the transmission had issues and the garage that did the vehicle inspection had the same thought. Went home and sent out about fifty emails to owners to find out it that was the norm or not. Got three years out of that transmission before it went south.

As myclone said, softer shifts mean more slippage which in turn means more heat generated which will kill your transmission eventually. Heat is the number one killer of automatic transmissions. Eventually you will learn to love that neck snapping shift like the loud humming sound of a high pressure fuel pump running. Lets you know everything is operating like it's supposed to .

When I first drove a 92 Vette we built to around 600hp, I about sh*t myself on the 1-2 upshift. Limped it back to our shop and asked my dad if I broke it. :-? That's when I learned about the 700r4 and it's strange operations. I'd imagine a SyTy built up would propably be pretty scary the first time around. :rock:

I agree. Many years ago my friend had a 92 full size Chevy 4x4 with a shift kit and dash mounted push button shift improver and it shifted like our trucks. Back in July, I test drove a 92 TY and was also suprised by the 1-2 shift. when I picked up my SY in August also noticed the same thing. Friends etc also asked about the shift. I believe I read several posts on here stating the same. I recently had the tranny filter changed and found no debris and still clear red fluid. It definately is more responsive after the change and I have a greater piece of mind since I haven't had the truck very long.

What city are you in MI?

You need to make sure the TV Cable is set properly.

Take your truck down a side street so you can keep an eye on your speedometer. What MPH does your 1-2 shift happen with about 20 percent throttle. It should be around 11-13 MPH.
