It almost sounds like a timing problem... either not enough or too much.... I know they used to have some killer 98 octane high test in germany.... Smelled like VP12 racing fuel... and twice as damn expensive.... I would put a timing light that utilizes the advance feature and find out what the ACTUAL timing is doing... You can look at a datamaster/scan tool but that is the commanded timing... not the actual... You have to look at the timing marks on the balancer... and hopefully the outer ring of the balancer hasn't slipped....... You also need to have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up, watch knock retard figures on datamaster/scantool ect, and you really need at least 2 to 3 sets of knowledgeable eyes to look at everything at once.... I hope this helps.... After I win the Mega-Millions lottery, I'll just jet over there and tune it in for him.... Also could be a compatibility issue with the DIS, especially if is firing the plugs with a waste spark (Like the 3.1, 3.8 v-6 gm's)... Shit loads of variables.... too much ocean....

Thanks for the answer.
Timing is, according him, OK (zero at idle) and advanced up to 10 degrees at higher RPM's. I gave him the hint with the FP and to check what firmware version he has since the 3.1 l could be an issue. Vacuum was checked this weekend - also OK. I requested a list what parts are still stock (sensors etc.) and hopefully I hear back from him.

...regarding killer gas... 98 is OK and called "super plus", some gas stations even carry 100 ... now you can remember HOW it sucks to live 91 octance SoCal with an engine build to "German gas specs." I love my ATR air/fuel with knock detector :)

Guys,

Sorry to chime in, I've no idea regarding the original question, but I thought that in Europe they talking about RON octane numbers oposed to the American (RON+MON)/2. So actually 98 in Europe is 93 in the States.

Peace,

FWIW, you are going to want idle timing at 20-35 degrees, cruise at 20-30 degrees, and high load timing at 10-20 degrees.

These numbers depend on a lot of things, which is why I gave a range.

Definitely need to step back and take a look at things.

Was this motor running fine before the DFI, or was the DFI put on a fresh motor/combination?
