I PASSED!!!...

...that cork-sucking IM240 emissions test. Yeah, that's the one on the fargin' dyno. Only took five tries.... :x :x

Ordinarily, I, like most people, would probably say, "So what? Big deal." The big deal is that my Ty is fairly heavily modified, with Vortec heads, 50 lb injectors, PT52 turbo, A2A IC, 180 degree thermostat and a bunch of other stuff. I got the truck to pass by simply tuning it -- no mechanical changes at all (already had a cat installed, came with the PTE kit).

My first time, hydrocarbons were too high, but everything else looked okay. As I leaned out the truck, the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) got too high. So, I finally just pulled out over 10 degrees of timing all over (above 1200 RPM). That got the NOx down to the point where I passed. YAY!

So, this probably still isn't a big deal to most people, but I'm pretty excited. For one thing, it means I don't have to waste $450 on emissions-related parts to get a waiver. For another thing, I don't have to go back to the testing station for another 2 years. :D

P.S. I did it with a full tank of Sunoco 94, too!

Do you have to pay even when you pass?? They bend us over for $20 here in Ohio. Don't even get me started. :fist:

Congrats on passing the "sniffer" :D ! Would not think a truck with the level of mods that you have could pass...

There are 88 counties in Ohio but, only 14 of them have the "e check". Guess which one I live in  ? It is a TOTAL racket! My older brother failed the test a few years ago and ended up paying an "e check certified" garage almost $1,000 to get it "clean" enough to pass. Still failed but due to the amount of money that he spent at the "e check certified" garage, they gave him a waiver! WTF doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Fortunately, my syclone will never be a the mercy of some yahoo who insists to trying to drive it on the dyno to test it ever again. Sy has "collector vehicle" status and is exempt from emissions testing as a result 8) . RJ, you and Brian need to get on the collector bandwagon with Daron and I. Chop, chop get on it pronto and stop paying those crooks every other year!

Cool info to know since Im sure its a matter of time until this area of VA has the sniffer test too. Right now we just have a visual but the VA gov has been kicking the idea around for years to start sniffer testing which tells me to be ready for it sooner or later.

Good idea Mike... I need to check into VA's collector plate deal as I know of some locals who have their older iron registered that way. Prolly take an act of congress to get a later model registered as a "collector" car but it might be worth checking into since I put prolly less than 1k miles on the sy every year.

myclone, there are three books that the Ohio BMV uses to vouch for the "collectability" of a vehicle: the National Automobile Dealers Association Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide, the 4th Edition Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 (Krause Publications) and The New Book of Collectible Cars 1930-1990 (Consumer Guide). As you can see, one year to late to make the cut :( . But there is this passage on the application: "Vehicle models not listed in these publications may be considered collector vehicles if the applicant obtains documentation from the manufacturer that the vehicle was in limited production or is in demand as a collectable vehicle at the time of application".

A Photoshopped "limited edition" picture of a syclone with my name and VIN was mailed in addition to a photocopy of a "Hot Haulers" and printed pages off of syty.org got the job done for me :D

Great info as always Mike. Thanks.. Hmm, now that I think about it I bet could prolly get some kinda of waver pertaining to "ornamental" or "stationary automobile" as all the sy does anymore is hold the floor down in the garage  .

Serious about performance
Bill is your 50# chip Open Loop? If so, doesn't that "ruin the cat" like I've heard? If not, what program did you use? (Or wasn't it an Ultimate 50#)

Thanks,

Thanks,
Nope, all my bins are closed loop. I'm using the Ultimate Chip hardware, but all my own tuning (started with one of BG's 50# heads&cam chips, and went from there).

Running open loop won't ruin the cat IF (and I stress IF) your tuning is very close to exactly right. However, you can ruin the cat if your tuning is too rich -- that'll end up overheating and burning up the cat over a long period. Besides, usually when someone runs open loop, they don't really care about emissions and just yank the cat altogether.

I know some guys like running open loop and using a WB02 for all their tuning (makes the idle smoother, for one thing), but I find that running closed loop and using the ST/LT corrections is a little easier for part-throttle driveability tuning, especially if you want to stay closed loop.

Yup, costs $14 for the test. If you fail, the first re-test is free. After that, it's another $14 per re-test. So, besides all the time spent tweaking chips, passing ended up costing me $56.

That's a deal. They bend us over for $35 in NY

Sons a bitches... $35! hahah.. I actually have the application filled out for the collector plates.. It's a steal at $90 some dollars once its said & done.

The best part is, on the bottom of the app it has something to the effect of
"I hereby swear im not trying to get these plates to avoid emissions check" or some shit like that...

Hey Mike... have fun next time you get plates for anything... I did a title transfer the other day & the lady at the counter was telling me prices on EVERYTHING went up... temp tags used to be like $6... now, $11... and so on :fist:

Ha ha ha, WAY ahead of ya esse. Don't EVEN get me started on the BMV... Sy has been down since last years NATS. As a result of me not driving it, I didn't even notice last year that the BMV didn't send me a renewal notice for my registration. So, back in May I get the power of attorney stuff filled out so that I can get it taken care of since it had expired. That was $60ish dollars then, I get a letter in the mail saying that they need another $30 to process my paperwork. So, I get my "new" registration sticker in June for the Northeast Extravanganza (which was moot as I was unable to attend and my truck was *still* broken :( ).

Well, here's where the BMV is doing cartwheels in my coco factory :fist: . My b-day is coming up next month. I get a renewal notice in the mail to renew my registration that I JUST RENEWED! Yup, you got that right, I have to pay the BMV exactly $89.56 AGAIN  :fist: ! I called the office in Columbus and explained that I just paid to have it renewed just a few months ago and if there was any way that I could get it prorated and they said "no, sorry that's the way that it is". I renewed the registration of my daily driver S10 the other day. Hell, between my paying for my daily driver, syclone (twice :fist: ) and my vehicle trailer, the BMV is getting darned near $300 from me this year . Those mofos can kiss my yellow Asian ass 0X !
