Just when everything is running great and I am turning towards upgrading the cosmetics things took a turn for the worse.
I was driving to grab a bite to eat tonight and got into a race with a Crossfire (1st kill by the way, if it those even count). Everything was well, then on an open stretch I decided to open it up a bit to triple check for any signs of knock. It boosted fine up to around 80 and I coasted a bit, then I hit the boost again and it spooled up and accelerated to 100, then suddenly "FOOOOSSSHH" and it lost boost. This is usually what happens when a pipe comes loose so I figure no big deal. I rolled down the window just to listen if anything sounded wrong. I gave it gas and it wouldn't spool at all, it made a rattle noise a little bit instead so I knew it wasn't a pipe this time. When I pulled it into the garage it smelled a little burnt. After the engine cooled off I took off the orange hose and sure enough the fan was stuck scraped to the side of the rim, the nut on it was finger loose, and the shaft would wobble side to side. I unstuck the blades, then got a ratchet and tightened the nut. It spun freely after that, but the shaft still would wobble slightly (maybe 1/8th inch any direction). I was feeling hopeful so started the engine, but to no avail. After a slight "SHIIINK" noise it drove with -5 max boost so I knew it was frozen again. On the bright side it drives wonderful for a 4.3 nonturbo.
Short version:
- killed Crossfire
- lost boost at 100mph
- engine made rattle
- turbo shaft loose, fan stuck
- do I need new turbo?
TIA
